A Day Made of Littles

There’s something about having the Littles at my house that shifts the whole day into a softer register. They don’t try to make anything magical; they just live in it. I only have to stand still long enough to notice.

This afternoon, the yard became their entire world. The swing under the old tree turned into a launch point for big ideas, the kind only small children can say with a straight face. One pushed off the ground with those determined little legs, the other stood nearby as if serving as an official observer, ready to announce the next great discovery.

They wandered between the porch steps, the grass, the playhouse, and the toy mailbox as if each spot held its own secret. The mailbox especially, opened with ceremony, inspected with the seriousness of a tiny postmaster, then shut again with a satisfied nod. It didn’t matter what was inside. The joy was in the opening.

There were no grand events. No special outing. Just sunlight through the trees, the creak of the swing rope, the soft thud of bare feet on grass. But watching them, I felt that familiar tug, the reminder that childhood isn’t made of milestones. It’s made of these small, unrepeatable moments that happen while the adults are thinking about something else.

Today, the Littles reminded me to pay attention. And that’s the magic.
