Right Now, She’s Seven

Lilly turned seven today, and she arrived with a brand‑new haircut she was very proud to show off. She’s precocious in that bright, effortless way she’s always had, and the freckles across her nose looked especially sweet in the afternoon light. They’re the same kind her Mimi had, scattered like someone brushed a little sunlight across her face.

There was ice‑cream cake and a pile of presents, and all three Littles were on their best behavior. Their mother noticed, of course. She pulled each one aside to tell them so, giving them that quiet, individual praise that always seems to land exactly where it should.

Lilly is growing by leaps and bounds. The Mister made the mistake of mentioning she’s already more than halfway to teenagerdom, and I hushed him before he could finish. I don’t want to think about that yet. Right now, I want to enjoy the little girl she still is, the one who still slips her hand into mine without thinking and laughs with her whole body. She’s seven, right now, in all the ways that matter.

Today was hers, and she shone.
