- A quiet cup of coffee in the morning feels like a tiny luxury to me. It’s small, but it makes the whole day settle into place.
- A tiny metal bell my grandma kept on her shelf. It used to be purple, but most of the paint has worn away. It has two entwined hearts engraved on it and says, “To my darling.” My grandpa gave it to her on one of their early anniversaries. When I was a child, I rang it every time I walked past it, and she noticed. She gave it to me later, and I still ring it and remember them.
- I’d try glassblowing if someone handed me everything I needed. The idea of shaping molten glass into something beautiful feels wild and a little magical, and I’d love to see what I could make without worrying about the cost or the setup.

An everyday tiny luxury to me is a quiet cup of coffee and Wordle in the mornings. The most random thing I’ve kept for sentimental reasons is a black Elvis t-shirt I bought in 1972. 🙂 Hobby?? I’ve always wanted to play piano. I’d need a magic bullet, but I think I could do it. FUN!

A painting that my grandfather on my dad side did about 50-60 years ago. It is a painting of north Swedish scenery.
Q3. What’s a hobby you’d try if someone handed you everything you needed? —
Astro photography. I have a small telescope that I use from time to time but I don’t have the equipment for real Astro photography.

I was going to say the rings on my fingers because each one was given to me by my husband. However, my morning coffee is also a tiny luxury that I love so much that on Tues. And Thur. I almost get irritated because I have to take my bp first, lol!
I guess my mother’s jewelry that Dad gave me and my garter from my wedding dress.
I’m such a crafter, but I’d love to learn watercolor painting. Quilts are so beautiful but I have watched them do the work and I don’t think I’d have the patience for it if I’m being honest.
Kim, I love how you balanced those answers. The rings from your husband carry so much meaning, and, believe me, I understand the irritation on those mornings when you have to take your blood pressure first. Your mother’s jewelry and your wedding garter are lovely keepsakes too. And watercolor painting would suit you. It has a calm, patient rhythm to it that feels close to the crafting you already enjoy.
Glassblowing sounds really so magical. Also, your little metal bell your grandmother gave you was very heartwarming and memorable. Sometimes, old things never age and bring back memories.

I would like to try wood carving.
John, morning coffee really does feel like a tiny luxury. I like that you kept the Lego car too. It’s such a small thing, but it holds its own kind of charm. Wood carving would be a great hobby to try. There’s something calming about shaping something with your hands.

1) A agree with you on the coffee, but I will also add my nightly cup of hot tea. I started this ritual a few years ago and find it to be very calming as I wind down my day.
2) Haha! I have this little square piece of grey metal that has the number 42 on it, with red tape. Some of the tape has come off, but the outline of the numbers is still visible where the tape is gone. I found it in front of my car one night, at a job I had back in the 00s. It had fallen off of a fence post. I have no idea what it meant, but what it means to me is the answer given by the supercomputer “Deep Thought” as the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. After 7.5 million years of computing, Deep Thought declares the answer to be “42.” Oh. I guess I should clarify, in case anyone doesn’t know . . . this is from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams.
3) This is harder for me, because I don’t possess the talent for most of the things I could think of. For example, I cannot draw worth a flip. Nevertheless, if someone handed me everything I needed to begin painting, I would give it a shot. I mean, I could always be another Jackson Pollock, right?
I also have my granddaddy’s little battery-powered transistor radio. I have no idea if it still works. Maybe I’ll try it today. Oh. I just looked at it. No way. It takes a 9-volt battery, and one of the connectors is missing. The other one is corroded. Oh, well. 😔
Jeff, that little radio sounds like a meaningful keepsake, even if it’s too far gone to fix. It’s still a piece of your granddaddy’s world, and that alone gives it value.
Jeff, happy timezones! I like how you paired your morning coffee with that nightly cup of tea. There’s something calming about ending the day with a warm drink, especially when it becomes a steady ritual. Your little metal square with the number forty‑two made me smile. The way you connected it to Hitchhiker’s Guide gives it a whole new meaning, and it’s fun that a random bit of metal turned into a personal nod to the answer to everything. And I think painting would be a great choice. You don’t need to draw to enjoy it. There’s a lot of freedom in letting color and motion take over, and a little Pollock energy never hurts.

What everyday thing feels like a tiny luxury to you? Definitely my morning coffee. I use the pour over method because it forces me to walk around and do some prep work helping me get the old brain ready to receive the jet fuel I need to make it back to my recliner so I can enjoy my coffee.

Your morning coffee routine sounds like a whole ritual. There’s something steadying about the slow pour over and the way it wakes up your mind before you settle into your recliner. The pocket knife is an incredible keepsake too. The history behind it, and the fact that your grand uncle carried it during those missions, gives it a weight few objects have. And your hobby answer made me smile. Galaxy travel to Nibiru would certainly be one way to spend an afternoon.

A hot shower is my daily luxury plus a bit of an indulgence since I take my time!
I don’t have a lot of keepsakes, but I do have my father’s wedding band and my mother’s driver’s license. I sold her ring, which I regret now.

I have trinkets and drawing that my daughter made for me when she was a little girl. One of them has been in the glove box of every vehicle I have owned for decades.
All I can think of for this one is being able to race outboard hydroplanes like my dad did when I was a child. Always wanted to try this!
