This Week’s Featured Comment from Pam

Some comments carry a little heart, and this week’s pick comes from pamperrault21. She left a note on my Aunt Gladys’s Supper post that made me smile.

“That’s a really lovely story, and thank you so much for sharing it with us. From the Mennonites, I learned about Friday Night Meat Pie. The Mennonite housewife would keep three tubs in her freezer, one for proteins, one for vegetables and one for gravies. Like Aunt Gladys, the bigger the variety, the more tasty the pie is likely to be. Each night when dinner was over, she’d save the orts in the appropriate tub ’til there was enough in the three combined to feed her family. Then, on a Friday night, she’d combine all three, pour into a casserole dish and top with biscuit dough. Like you, I still make mine but instead of biscuit dough (too many carbs), I use brothy smashed sweet potatoes. I just loved reading your story! Made me smile! xx”

Pam’s memory carries the same gentle spirit as Aunt Gladys’s supper. She took the idea of thrift and turned it into something tender. Her story felt like a hand on my shoulder.

I tucked her note here because it added a soft touch to the post. You can find her writing at Enchanting Essex.

Her comment is heartwarming and very informative ✨
Learning about this culinary tradition of the Mennonites is a wonderful reminder of the richness of living a very simple life, while being consciously connected to the land, and cherishing every morsel of what Mother Nature graciously offers us.
I really enjoyed it! 🌷

Reading this comment made me smile, too! ☺️ I was imagining the scene as I was reading it from saving the orts in the tub to making a casserole dish from them.
