Dad played catch with me almost every day when he came home from work. I waited on the front step with our gloves, a ball, and a bat, ready the moment he pulled into the driveway. He didn’t change his clothes. He said hello to my mom and sisters, then followed me straight to the backyard.
One autumn afternoon, my older and younger sister joined us, and my mom came out too. The yard was wet and muddy, but we played anyway. I hit the ball over the back fence and offered to climb over and get it. Dad said he would do it, so he stepped over the fence in his suit. When he landed on the other side, his foot shot out from under him and he went straight down into the mud. We all froze, unsure if we should laugh.
He reached out, grabbed the ball, tried to stand, and slid again. He fell a second time, and by then he was laughing so hard he couldn’t get up. Every time he tried, he slid and fell again. He was covered in mud. My sisters, my mom, and I looked at each other and burst into laughter. Dad stayed on the ground, laughing with us, unable to stop.
