Summers at Grandma’s always felt like they stretched a little longer than the ones at home. Days moved at an easy pace, and nothing ever felt rushed. I woke up knowing I’d find something to do, even if it was just wandering around her yard or sitting on the porch steps watching cars drift past on the quiet street.
Grandma let the days unfold without fuss. If we wanted to stay outside until the sky softened into evening, she let us. If we wanted to color or watch old movies, she didn’t mind. She had a way of making everything feel steady, like the whole summer was held in her hands.
I didn’t think about the end of summer while I was living it. Kids don’t. We just move from one moment to the next, believing the good parts will keep going. But when our parents came to pick us up, something shifted. The house looked the same and the yard looked the same, but I didn’t. I’d grown a little, learned a little, and felt a little braver.
Grandma hugged us and said she’d see us soon. She didn’t make a big scene. She never did. But I held onto her longer than usual. I didn’t want to leave the yellow house or the quiet nights or the small adventures that seemed to appear out of nowhere. I didn’t want to leave her.
On the drive home, I watched the road and thought about lightning bugs drifting out of a jar, a snake slipping through the grass, and the neighbor waiting for a limo that would never come. I thought about Grandma’s laugh and her sports car and the way she ordered pizza every time we visited.

Very nice.
Lovely story. I could imagine your Grandma. Loved the line, “She had a way of making everything feel steady, like the whole summer was held in her hands.”

That sounds like a wonderful childhood memory. Grandma’s house is always best.
Summer and Grandma’s house go together like peanut butter and jam. I have fond memories of my grandmother too. I loved this post.
