Cool Grandma Episode 4: The Midnight Movie Walk

Another reason I called her Cool Grandma was because she let my sister and me stay up late to watch the midnight movie. We’d settle in with her and watch whatever came on, and it always felt like the best kind of summer freedom.

One night we were watching “The Blob,” and the house was quiet except for the TV. Then we heard loud popping sounds outside. Grandma turned the volume down and asked if we heard it. We nodded. She pulled the curtains aside and looked out into the dark, but she didn’t see anything. More popping broke through the stillness, and my sister said it had to be fireworks.

Grandma stood up and told us to follow her. We didn’t hesitate. We just stepped out the front door behind her and into the warm night. The popping kept going, sharp and irregular, and we walked down the sidewalk trying to spot the fireworks that should’ve been lighting up the sky.

We made it two blocks from the house before Grandma stopped. She gasped, and for a second I thought she’d finally seen something. She looked down at herself, then at us, and waved us back toward the house.

As we hurried along, she said, “We’re out here in our pajamas!”

She sounded worried, but my sister and I giggled all the way home. It felt like we’d slipped into a tiny adventure without meaning to. Nothing dramatic happened, but the night stayed with me. Cool Grandma didn’t just let us stay up late. She let us step outside and feel like the world was bigger than it looked from the couch.
