Clinical Humor

Some moments in nursing stay with you.

Years ago, I mispronounced a patient’s name in the hallway. He removed his glass eye and threw it at me with complete confidence in his aim.

I set it behind the nurses’ station for safekeeping.

The ward has always had its own sense of humor.

Just another Tuesday.

OH—–AND I THOUGHT YOU’D GIVE A FEW MORE EXAMPLES! I used to work in personal care/health care and I could use some healthy humor this morning! The guy did ask for his eye back, didn’t he? If he were a parliamentarian (whew) we could say…the ayes have it!

That’s quite the reaction! Wonder if that temper is how he lost the eye to begin with. Maggie

It would have served him right it the eye got lost or damaged.

It surprised me at the time, but it turned into one of those stories everyone joked about later.

Didn’t realize you’re a nurse. Tough job!

An adult responded with that kind of temper tantrum over a mispronounced name? Did he ask for his glass eye back?

Years ago, before I switched to a mom and pop store, CVS kept screwing up my prescriptions. Every month, no matter how many times I asked, no matter how many times I reminded them, they would find some way to screw it up.

Finally one day I was there and they hadn’t filled it, but I needed it because I was going away for four days. The tech was rude and not helpful, so I asked her if she had two pencils.

“Uh, yes, why two?” she asked.

“So I can stab myself in the brain through my eyes,” I told her.

Normally I’m not like that, but there’s only so much disrespect I can take.

The next time I went to pick up my prescription, another tech filled it and paused as she was ringing me up. “Why does it say Richard?”

“Richard?” I asked. “That’s not my name.”

“Yeah,” she said, “but in the notes here it says ‘Richard Cranium.'”

LOL.

Why would he do that? You only just mispronounced his name 😉

Reply
Kymber @booomcha July 2, 2026 - 9:54 am

Right? He definitely had his own way of expressing himself.

Jeff July 1, 2026 - 10:53 pm

You could have put it in your pocket and said, “I’ve got your eye on me!”

Reply
Kymber @booomcha July 1, 2026 - 10:54 pm

Lolol 😂 Now why didn’t I think of that?

My brother’s clinical humor was to comment once, “Well, at least he didn’t die of anything serious.”😂

Nursing can be a rough profession. I’ve been with many arrestees at hospitals and the staff have always been wonderful. I’ve always loved their sense of humor, too.

Have a fabulous day and rest of the week, Kymber. Love and hugs. ♥

You have a wonderful rest of the week, too, my friend. Love and hugs. xo
