October Reading Lineup!

Well, hello there, Friends! Here we are, the summer coming to a close, and near the beginning of Autumn when the air turns crisp, and curling up with a book, blanket, and cup of tea is the best thing ever.

For me, October rings in the best time of year. A prequel to the holidays as well.

There are books I read every October, so I thought I would present them here as they are favorites of mine. I’m also going to throw in some books I hope to read that are new to me. Maybe I’ll get to them all, or maybe some will end up back on the TBR.

So, here we go. I have split them up between Recurrent (or those I read every year), and To Add.

While I don’t read The Blackstone Chronicles every year, I’m putting it here as an honorable mention because I’ve read it during many different Octobers over the years.

As it’s been a few years, maybe it’s time to bring it out again.

It will depend on if I feel there is time or not. John Saul is an author I like, but unfortunately, I sometimes feel let down by how his books end. It feels like you never know whether his book will have a good ending or not, but I like this one.

I may add more books, but in October, I tend to read a little less because there are other things I like to do this time of year.

Mr. Hawke and I like to visit all the local apple orchards, pumpkin patches, and then, there’s the annual Halloween party to throw!

What do you like to do this time of year? Are there any favorite books you read?

Thank you for reading, liking, lurking, and commenting! I hope you’re having a terrific week!

This looks like a great list. Not many people read Le Fanu’s “Carmilla.” The original “Frankenstein” is so different from the old movies, too. Happy reading!

Thank you so much! I can’t wait to read them. 🙂 I’m excited about Carmilla, and Frankenstein, too!

LOL Thank you so much, Belladonna. 😀 I’ve read Dracula, and am in Midnight Mass now. I thought MM was based on the show on Netflix with the same name, but I was wrong. lol I’m enjoying it anyway, though. 😀

I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of it, but me and my sister typically take part in the Gothtober readathon where you read spooky books in October. It already looks like you have the perfectly-lined up creepy reads though! I love a lot of these. Did you see that Netflix made Midnight Mass into a show?

“Gothtober!!!” I love it!! Where might I find it, if you don’t mind me asking. 😀

Yes! I loved Midnight Mass on Netflix. The Mister loved it, too. We’re going to read the book together. Some of my favorite times are reading with him.

It’s a BookTuber thing. If you look up Gothtober on YouTube you’ll see the 2023 reader announcement. It’s pretty cool because every year they create an online game for it related to Halloween and every stage of the game tells you what kind of book you need to read for Gothtober based on the choices you made in the game.

I love your reading list, Kymber! I’m a big F. Paul Wilson fan (Repairman Jack!), so I’m thrilled to see Midnight Mass on your list. And I’ll forever be a vamp fan.

YAY! I’m so glad you like the reading list, Teri! I can’t wait to read Midnight Mass. It’s been on the TBR for so long but I’ve been wanting to wait on that one until October.

Yessssss, that’s how I roll, too. lol I wait all year for this! 😀

The Mister sets the notifications on his phone to a werewolf howling. It’s hilarious.

What is your 1st favorite?

I don’t really re-read books as often as I used to, but Watership Down and Wuthering Heights are probably my most reread of all time.

I’m currently reading through the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. Before that, I read her Court of Thorns and Roses series. Between the two series, I have read nine books over the summer. I don’t think I’ve read that much in years and I’m not sure I can top it over the fall and winter!

I would at least like to finish the ToG series and get started on Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yaro before the second book in that series comes out.

I hadn’t thought about Watership Down and Wuthering Heights in a long time, but I can definitely see what you mean. Both books are so good!

I haven’t read the Throne of Glass series, but it’s now in my TBR! I’m looking up the Court of Thorns and Roses books, too. 🤍🌺

Oooooh I just looked up Fourth Wing and put that in my TBR, too! 😀

Thank you for sharing!!.. you have some interesting books!… I do not have a “favorite” but will probably read Poe (or maybe “The Hound of the Baskrvilles” ) at Halloween night.. I just follow my heart and enjoy each day because they won’t come again…. 🙂

Hope all is well in your part of the universe and until we meet again…
May the dreams you hold dearest
Be those which come true
May the kindness you spread
Keep returning to you

I find it quite fascinating that you read the same set of books every October. I’ve read a few books over again but not many. They are great choices though.

Thank you, Thomas. I guess it’s just a comfort to me to reread a book. 🙂

I like celebrating my birthday…most years! And October 31st 1989, is the dark and stormy night my wife and I moved from New York State out here to Massachusetts!

Reply

Wow! Happy birthday to you this month! And I love Massachusetts. I haven’t been there in a long time, but on one wedding anniversary, the Mister and I visited the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast in Fall River. Then we headed over to Salem. It was a wonderful trip.

Sounds like it was. 😀 Well, me and my Misuss live in Douglas, a small town south of Worcester, the second-biggest city in the state.. It’s just north of the borders of Rhode Island and Connecticut where their corners join An old mill and farming town.

This busier fall time of the year is not the best for ramping up my reading. But then the Miami Book Fair’s coming up and I often spend more time now reading local writer literature that might be presented there. If you get some extra travel the event is very worthwhile for an avid reader like I envision you to be.

I loved the Bad Seed! I never read the book but the original 1956 black and white classic movie with Patty McCormack was great!❤

Reply

Yes! I so agree with you. It’s because of the movie I want to read the book. 😀

October is fantastic and my favorite month of all! I’ve re-read a few books over the years, but I do read much less since I’ve been married (going on 12 years). I’m currently reading two books simultaneously.
My favorite things to do in October — seems all the good stuff happens in October. I’ll be going to see Nick Cave perform; also Les Claypool. A trip to Tarrytown, NY is always on the list, where the legend of Sleepy Hollow came to be. In our area people go all out with Halloween decorations, as the real Charles Addams lived in the town over from us. And, finally, The Union County Performing Arts Center often shows the silent version of Phantom of the Opera, which is always fun. This legendary theatre is where “School of Rock” was filmed. 🙂

Kymber Hawke September 21, 2023 - 11:08 am

That’s really hard for me to do (read two books simultaneously).

All the good stuff DOES happen in October! I agree! lol That would be so amazing to visit Tarrytown! And who doesn’t love The Addams Family? So cool! That’s really neat about The Union County Performing Arts Center, too! Phantom is a favorite of mine. The first time I ever saw it live was many years ago in Toronto.

Reply
Maryanne September 21, 2023 - 11:12 am

Wow, very cool you saw it live! My mom (RIP) did too and she got me a Phantom mug that I had for years before it broke.

Reply
Kymber Hawke September 21, 2023 - 11:15 am

I bet that was a treasured item. xo I’ve seen the sequel “Love Never Dies” live, too. My husband and I love going to shows.

I have a favorite book that I read every December. It’s called “The Christmas Pig” by Kinky Friedman. It has 23 chapters so I read a chapter every night and it takes me up to Christmas Eve. It’s a beautiful story about a boy and a pig who become friends.
