My reading has slowed down over the past couple weeks, and I’m not sure why. How were Grogu and Disclosure Day? I had every intention of going, but things got in the way. I finished Widow’s Bay on Apple TV. If you haven’t seen it, I bet you’d like it.

I heard Widow’s Bay was very good but I don’t have Apple TV. Thanks for the recommendation.

My reading is so slow right now, too. I only read one book the entire month.

I liked both movies. We saw Grogu for my son’s birthday and he and The Mister liked it a lot. I enjoyed it well enough. I liked Disclosure Day even though it’s gotten a lot of bad reviews. Eve Hewson is one of my favorite actresses and she was amazing.

As for me I read
* Here Comes the Sun: A Last Chance for the Climate and a Fresh Chance for Civilization by Bill McKibben – A great book
* This changes everything by Naomi Klein – a not so great book, and very thick (500+ pages), and I am not entirely done
* Perfect by P.J. Gudka, which is a truly great novel, amazing

I like seeing what you’ve read and are reading, Thomas. The first and last book sound very good. I’d like to put them on the TBR. Thanks for the recommendations. As for the middle book, is it inaccurate, you think?

Wow that’s great! Did you like Season 1? Are you going to continue?

Reply
Quantez Xihuitl June 28, 2026 - 5:06 pm

Yeah, I’ll mostly likely finish watching it next weekend if I don’t have to work.

Question: what inspired the writer of the original wizard of oz, to write it ?

Reply
Kymber @booomcha June 28, 2026 - 5:24 pm

Great question! Baum wanted a fairy tale that felt kind and full of wonder. Around that time his infant niece, Dorothy Gage, died, and many biographers think he honored her by giving his heroine the name Dorothy Gale. Oz grew from that quiet mix of imagination, grief, and the hope that stories could make children feel safe.

Wow

Kymber @booomcha June 28, 2026 - 5:31 pm

Glad it hit you that way. I love little bits of history. Especially about The Wizard of Oz. 🙂

I read Joy Neal Kidney’s new book, The Immigrant and the Outlaw. It is a collection of previously published stories on American life. I enjoyed it very much.

That sounds really good, John. Thank you for the recommendation. I will check it out!

I’m reading Exit Strategy by Lee Child. It’s one of the Reacher books and my first for years since they cast Tom Cruise (5’8″ in lifts) as a 6’6′ giant of a man. I had been loyal for the first 18. but that was the end. It’s not what I call ‘can’t-put-downable’ so it’s taking a while. Seems to be a good story, but fragmented at the moment and I’m about halfway through.

Kymber @booomcha June 28, 2026 - 11:22 am

I know they’re immensely popular, but I haven’t read any of them. My mom has and she likes them. I can see why Tom Cruise was a disappointment in the role.

I hope this book comes together and is satisfying for you. 💗🌺

The Visitor is also good, and the twist totally unexpected.

Kymber @booomcha June 28, 2026 - 2:38 pm

That’s cool! Thank you! It’s going on the list. 😀

pensitivity101 June 28, 2026 - 5:00 pm

The nice thing about Reacher books is that you don’t have to read them in order.

Kymber @booomcha June 28, 2026 - 5:04 pm

That is important for me because there are so many of them. Good point.

pensitivity101 June 28, 2026 - 1:20 pm

Oh, ‘Bad Luck and Trouble’ is one title. Good story.

Kymber @booomcha June 28, 2026 - 2:38 pm

Thank you. Good to know. I love a good story.

Hi Kymber, I read No Exit a while ago and hated it, lol. I am a very voracious but picky reader! In June, I read 12 books, my favorite of which was Incantation by Alice Hoffman. I am currently reading Between a Heart and a Rock Place, which is a memoir by Pat Benatar, and I am enjoying it so far. I don’t watch much TV, but I love dragons, so I resubscribed to HBO for House of the Dragon ~ S3 began last Sunday. It was a great first episode, and I am looking forward to e2 tonight!

Hi there, Paula!

Did you see the movie No Exit? I haven’t but want to. I think it’s on Hulu.

Twelve books is great and I love Allice Hoffman! I haven’t read that one yet, but would like to. It’s on the TBR. Love Pat Benatar, too. I bet that is a good memoir.

HOTD is one of my favorite shows. I need to renew HBO in order to watch, but The Mister and I have decided to wait until all the episodes have dropped before we do. It’s killing me. LOL

You are an amazing reader, Kymber, my eyes can’t tolerate looking at books, it hurts after a while.

I only read one this month which is way below average. My concentration just wasn’t there. But thank you. 💗🌺

Books:
I finished The Two Faces of January by Patricia Highsmith, a long read due to work and stuff breaking up with my read. It was ok, fizzled out in the final third. Just started Murder in Transit by Edward Marston, book 22 in the Railway Detective series.

Films:
At the Cinema: Masters of the Universe. A great fun goofy movie with a simple good vs evil storyline. Lots of tongue in cheek and self aware jokes.

On homemedia: Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues. Long overdue sequel to This is Spinal Tap. Fun, and some good jokes, but lacking the icy but accurate satire of the original. Worth it just to see the cameos from rock legends.
Battleship Podemkin: A 2024 remaster with a brand new score by the Pet Shop Boys. Undoubtedly a cinematic triumph, even if it is blatant propaganda for the Russian Revolution.

TV series:
The BBC 1978/1982 adaptations of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley’s People starring Alec Guinness as Smiley. An excellent set of series with the creme de la creme of British acting talent of the period. Though… Alec Guinness in a German sex club watching gay strippers in BDSM outfits was not on my bingo card for the month.

I’m sorry The Two Faces of January wasn’t better. Hopefully, this new book will leave you satisfied. I haven’t read any of that series before.

I wondered how Masters of the Universe was. And I haven’t seen Spinal Tap 2, though I would love to catch those cameos.

I like Alec Guinness, but yes, how unexpected. lol

The Sandman June 28, 2026 - 9:52 am

I have read one of the previous Railway Detective series. Not bad but the prose kind of felt like you were reading a novelized screenplay.

Reply
Kymber @booomcha June 28, 2026 - 9:56 am

Did you like it anyway? Or was it too distracting?

Reply
The Sandman June 28, 2026 - 9:57 am

I enjoyed it, but felt the author had his eye on pitching a TV series

Kymber @booomcha June 28, 2026 - 10:16 am

Oh, yes, I see.

Kim Smyth June 28, 2026 - 9:12 am

I read Atmosphere which was good but deals with a same sex relationship. I just tried to look past it.

I watched The Outlaws on Prime. It’s a series with three seasons and it’s British but sooo good! It’s brash as has a lot of bad language, so be prepared, but it’s also tongue-in-cheek humor.

Reply
Kymber @booomcha June 28, 2026 - 9:31 am

I’m going to look Atmosphere up. I might like to read it.

I didn’t have a good month of reading in June with only one book.

The Outlaws sounds good. I like tongue-in-cheek humor.

I will definitely do that. If not here then on Pinterest in chat. 🙂
