This is in response to This Week’s Writer’s Workshop Prompts – August 13, 2026, hosted by John Holton.
I chose option #1: Write a post inspired by the word hairbrush.
I once gave my daughter an antique hairbrush and mirror set for Christmas. The velvet case was soft and worn, and inside it was a note from the woman who owned it long before us, nothing elaborate, just a quiet record of who she was and that the set had meant something to her. I wrote my own note for Katy and tucked it beside the first because I wanted her to know why I chose it. When she opened the case, she lifted the hairbrush and read both notes with tears in her eyes. She had a small smile when she looked up and thanked me. She closed the case gently, as if she understood the care behind the gift. In that quiet moment, I realized what I had actually given her. It wasn’t the hairbrush itself. It was the sense of being part of something that started before she was born and will continue after both of us.

A beautiful story, and a lovely gift, Kymber. I love vintage items. 🌹
It’s so nice to meet others that enjoy vintage items, too. Thank you so much, Eugi. 🌺

Thank you so much, Indira. I’m so glad you loved this.
This is a beautiful gift to give to your daughter. 🥰 I love antique and vintage shopping, and vintage gifts are truly very special.
My favorite part of this is that you also included your own heartfelt note to your daughter to go along with the original note. Truly priceless! 💜🥰
Thank you, Jenn. I’ve always loved the way vintage pieces carry a bit of their past with them. Adding my own note felt right, and I’m glad it came through the way I hoped. 🌺
A beautiful gift. 🎁

So beautiful! I love collecting vintage items, and I have a set like this too, though mine isn’t nearly as pretty.
Thank you. I’ve always had a soft spot for pieces that have been around awhile. They bring a bit of their past with them, and it’s lovely that you’ve got one that speaks to you.

Beautiful, my friend! 💖
Thank you so much. 🌺
How beautiful! I love to buy vintage items, and have a similar, though not as pretty, set.
Thank you. I’ve always liked things that had a life before mine. Even the simpler sets have their own quiet story, and it’s nice knowing someone else sees the charm in that.
This is lovely Kymber and the kind of gift that will go on forever. I love the note and your addition. When your daughter passes it on. hopefully she will include a note too so that the gift generates its own history/
Thank you, Di. I hope Katy passes it on with a note of her own too. I wish I could see into the future just to know where it ends up.
It would be fascinating to know wouldn’t it.
Goosebumps
