I always had a line like that ready for the young looking docs when the patient questioned them. I would say “it’s not their first rodeo” and my older face perhaps helped keep them calmer == both the patient and the young doc! Bernie
The SECOND time I was to draw blood on a patient in the Iowa City VA Hospital, my trainer, George and I entered the room, and when I proceeded to tourniquet the patient’s arm, he asked me suspiciously, “Are you the trainer or the TRAINEE?”
I calmly responded, “It’s not like you’re the first patient I’ve done this for.”
George had a reeeeally hard time not rolling over in laughter until we left the room!!!😂
I bet her daughter was a cool kitten 🐾😂😂😂 patients are always antsy when it comes to drawing blood from them. Nobody likes things being taken from them, ask politely and they might give it voluntarily 😅
I’m a fan of anyone who can bring a little humour into their daily activities, so many people are so stuck up nowadays, like they’re walking around with piles.
I was a phlebotomist for 22 years and I learned the hard way to anchor the vein so it doesn’t roll on you. Still though, with cancer patients, it’s hard to even FIND a vein to anchor. So I get it!!
I’m lying in bed and just had to laugh out loud! The problem of actually hitting a vein is nothing new for me. You see, nothing shows through my skin. I have one good spot on the back of my right hand, and only qualified nursing staff or the nurse at my GP’s practice are allowed to use it. I hate having blood drawn so much—it just hurts like crazy. I’m 42 years old now, yet I’m as sensitive as a five-year-old.
I’m glad it gave you a laugh. Veins can be stubborn, and some spots really are the only reliable ones. Sensitivity doesn’t go away just because we get older. I feel for you.
First, I am sorry you had that experience but honestly, I’m sitting here giggling away – “Once at normal speed.” You’re rivalling me for cheekiness! Also, I love that you’re using a winged infusion set – less pain but sadly, our local lab hardly ever uses them (at least not on me).
