This is in response to This Week’s Writer’s Workshop Prompts – July 30, 2026, hosted by John Holton.
I chose option #2: Write a post in exactly twelve (12) lines.
Where the Game Was Always On, in 12 Sentences:
I grew up in a Tigers family, and the game was part of the rhythm of our house. Dad brought home tickets from work, and we went whenever he could get them. I always wore my cap and carried my mitt, certain that a fly ball might come my way if I stayed ready. My younger sister knew every stat and could call a play before it happened. My older sister brought binoculars so she could watch the players in the dugout she thought were cute. Mom jumped out of her seat whenever anything exciting happened, and she still does. At home, the game played on the TV or drifted through the rooms from the radio. We never missed a night. Those games held all of us in one place, gathered around the same field and hoping for the same swing. Years later, we went to a Tigers game for my parents’ sixtieth wedding anniversary, and it felt like stepping back into something that had never left us. The Mister fit into it easily, as if he had always been part of the tradition. I still feel something settle in me when the Tigers take the mound, and I think it’s because those moments shaped the way I understand home.

Thanks for sharing this lovely glimpse of your life, Kymber. 💖 And how wonderful that your parents are still together after 60 years! 🥂
Thank you, Debbie. I’m glad the glimpse felt lovely to you. That game carries a sweetness for me, especially with my parents still going strong after all these years. I’m grateful you felt that in the story.🌺🩷
Who knew a post about baseball could be so beautiful. I loved this nostalgic piece. And your parents’ marriage made it to (at least) 60 years? That’s awesome!
Thank you. I’m glad the nostalgia landed for you. My parents are still going strong, and that anniversary game felt like stepping back into our old rhythm.
😂😆😂
😅😂😅
This is funny, look up the Detroit tigers game with the Oreos. There was a black squirrel on the field with a bird and everyone was trying to catch the squirrel. It was quite entertaining 😂😺. They did catch it eventually, but the squirrel kept evading them 😂😆.
That’s hilarious! That squirrel probably thought it got called up to the majors and wasn’t about to waste its shot.😂⚾🐿️
Nice memories of you and your family watching those tiger games.
Thank you, Jesse. I will always cherish those memories. ⚾🌺
Beautiful memories to cherish and also to hold Kymber! ❤❤
Thank you, Carol Anne. Some memories really do stay close.🩷🩷
Such a beautiful piece on your cherished family memories! I enjoyed reading it. 😊
Thank you, Jenn. I’m glad the memories landed for you. It means a lot.😊🌺
What a memory! Takes me back to the days when the Texas Rangers played at “Arlington Stadium,” in the seventies. They were never any good, back then, but my dad would take us to several games a year. I would listen to their games in my room, and keep score on an official scoresheet.
That’s a great memory, Jeff. Keeping score in your room says everything about how much the game meant to you. Those early seasons stay with you.
Reading this as a lifelong baseball fan and it was really a beautiful memoir. I’m sorry about your struggling Tigers this year (but not really since I’m a Twins fan!).
Lol 🤣 Thank you for the sympathy. It’s been a bummer. But they did smoke the Orioles tonight at least.
The Twins are a great team.
Your writing has given us such a sweet and endearing look into your childhood home. I am grateful and enjoyed reading it. We are now living in Kingsville and, ‘though this is definitely part of Ontario, ‘most everyone in our town is a fan of the Tigers. Confession (shhhhhh!) we’re rapidly becoming Tigers’ fans too (except, of course, when they play the Jays). Lovely post, thank you. xx
Thank you, Pam. I’m glad the piece brought some of that childhood feeling forward. Kingsville sounds wonderful, and I love that the town leans Tigers. I think the Jays are great too, so I understand the split loyalty.⚾🩷🌺
I was born and raised in Detroit. I have drifted away from baseball, but as a kid, the Tigers were my heroes.
Thank you, John. Growing up with the Tigers in Detroit is its own kind of magic. Those early heroes stay with you, no matter how life shifts around them.
This is precious!
Thank you so much, Joy. 🌺🩷
What a great family story and something I can totally relate to. ❤️⚾️
Thank you, Nancy. It’s one of those family stories that stays with you, and I love that it connected with yours. 🩷🌺⚾
Nice memories and story. Mom lived in Detroit (Belleville, actually)for six months when she first started flying. She dated a guy who took her to a Tigers game once and he got kicked out for carrying alcohol into the stadium. So…sticking with being a Twins fan over here, LOL!
Thank you. Belleville isn’t far from where we grew up watching the Tigers, so that made me smile. Your mom’s date getting tossed from the stadium is quite a memory to carry around. I can see why the Twins feel like the safer choice over there.
