Hello and happy timezones, kind friends! I have greatly enjoyed your responses to my Get to Know You posts.

So, it’s time. Come sit on my porch for a spell. Tea, lemonade and refreshments will be served shortly.

Here are 3 questions! Let’s go!

Round #53:

  1. Did you ever hurt yourself in an embarrassing way?

  2. What are the time-wasters you typically do?
  3. What quirky behavior do you do under stress?

Here are my answers:

  1. When I was a kid, I wasn’t watching where I was going while I walked across the alley back to my house. Instead, I was waving goodbye to my friend Curtis. Well, I walked straight into a tree and nearly knocked myself out! To make it worse, my dad told people the bump on my forehead was because I was paying attention to the boys instead of watching where I was going! LOL 🤣
  2. I play word games on my phone. Such a waste of time, but I enjoy them.
  3. I laugh. Whenever I get hurt, or something bad happens, you’ll find me laughing like a real nerd.

And now, it’s your turn! If you don’t want to participate, no problem! I’m just glad you’re here. A hello would be fantastic, though! Of course, lurkers are always heartily welcome, too. xo

Thank you so much for reading, liking, lurking, and commenting! You are important!

Oh, interesting questions Kymber
1) When I was 12, I was setting off fire crackers near Canada Day. I had a pocket full of the small ones. I lit one and it did not explode, so I put it back in that pocket. About 15 seconds later, the slow fuse finally exploded, causing a chain reaction with the other 20. My first expression was surprise and then I started hopping around. The other kids thought it was funny, but it took a month for the bruises to heal.
2. Playing Solitaire on the computer.
3. Mumbling to myself until I figure the problem out.

Happy Monday Kymber. Allan

Haha, your number 1 sounds kinda like me, not paying attention and running into stuff 😆 what phone games do you like to play? If they help you relax it’s totally not a time waster! ✨

Did you ever hurt yourself in an embarrassing way? Too many times. The most embarrassing one I remember was tripping over my own feet because I was looking at one of the prettiest girls in my high school class…and not watching where I was going.

What are the time-wasters you typically do? Computer games. Right now, my fave is Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age.
What quirky behavior do you do under stress? I get up from my office chair and start pacing.

Reply
Kymber @booomcha February 7, 2025 - 4:11 pm

Hi, Alex!

Oh no! It’s the worst when you trip over your own feet. The up side is that I think we’ve all done it. LOL

That games sounds interesting!

That’s what The Mister does, too! 😀

Thank you so much for playing. I hope you’re having a good Friday!

Although I only knew of her by reputation – and learned that she existed late in 12th grade (South Miami High had 2100 students at the time) – I didn’t see her until a month or so before we graduated. Her name is Cecilia, but everyone called her Cece, and of course many guys were smitten by her, So, for half of my senior year I kept on hearing about how cute, sexy, beautiful, or fetching Cece was…and since I didn’t have any classes with her, I hadn’t seen her yet.

On “Tripping Day” (sometime in late April/early May of 1983, I was walking from one class to another on the second floor when one of my friends on the student newspaper staff patted me on the shoulder and said, “Hey, Alex, there’s Cece!” I turned around, and there, not more than 10 feet away, she stood, in jeans and a Cobra Charmers tee, casually chatting with a friend outside her next class. She was drop-dead gorgeous.

In fact, if you read my novella at some point, you’ll understand that Cece was the physical template for Jim’s crush, Marty.

Kymber @booomcha February 7, 2025 - 5:44 pm

Ooooooh, I love getting the backstory! Thank you for that!

I bought your book last July, I think but it’s time I read it. I can’t tell you how sorry I am that it’s been on the tbr so long. I know I’ll love it!

Alex Diaz-Granados February 7, 2025 - 5:51 pm

Although I didn’t know Cece long enough to develop a serious crush (which would have complicated 12th grade for me), she made such an impression that when I created Marty for Reunion. Cece was her unwitting model:

I am sitting alone in my old English classroom at my old desk, reading from Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The only sounds in the room are the ticking of the clock and the occasional rustling of the pages of the book. Then, Martina Reynaud, the most beautiful girl in the Class of ’83, walks in. She’s tall, graceful, and absolutely breathtaking. She’s wearing a black dress, one that shows off her long dancer’s legs. Her peaches-and-cream complexion is flawless; there is no sign of a pimple anywhere. Her long chestnut hair cascades down over her shoulders. In short, she is the personification of feminine elegance from the top of her head to her high-heeled shoes.

I try to get back to my reading assignment, but the scent of her perfume, a mixture of jasmine and orange blossoms, is beguiling. I look to my right; she is sitting at the desk right next to mine. She gives me a smile. My heart skips a beat. I know guys who would kill for one of Marty’s smiles. She has that effect on most men. Her smile is full of genuine warmth and affection; I can tell by the look in her hazel eyes.

Kymber @booomcha February 7, 2025 - 7:06 pm

Lovely! I read the novella and I love it! I’m so glad you reminded me. 🙂 It’s so bittersweet, isn’t it?

Alex Diaz-Granados February 7, 2025 - 7:51 pm

‘Tis.

I originally wrote the story in 1998, but the dream sequence where I introduce Marty was based on a writing exercise for my CRW-2001 class in college…and that was done in 1987. I was in a somber mood when I wrote the first draft; one of my fellow choral singers from SMSH had died recently in a car crash, and even though she wasn’t a “Marty-like” crush, I was still shaken by the loss. And I’d missed my 15-year reunion because it was too pricey. That’s probably why the tone of the novella is so bittersweet.

Out of curiosity, do you have any favorite characters or scenes?

Kymber @booomcha February 7, 2025 - 8:06 pm

There were several I enjoyed. I liked when it was the choral room with Marty and Jim and they kissed. I was so hoping he’d tell her! 🙂

I think Mark was a lot of fun with his advice and funny banter.

The part about Mrs. Quincy leaving and there not being a Spring concert as a result made me sad. I bet the duet between Marty and Jim would have been great!

Oh, and I was really mad at Kathy, but glad I knew what happened to make Jim so reluctant to open up.

Alex Diaz-Granados February 7, 2025 - 8:20 pm

You’ll be happy to know that “Reunion: Coda” will expand the narrative. both backward in time as well as forward. Think of the novella as the center of the story, with the novel filling in the “blank spaces” of the narrative.

Thanks for reading my first attempt at a serious work of fiction, Kymber!

Kymber @booomcha February 7, 2025 - 8:29 pm

That’s a cool idea!

Thank you for encouraging me to read it. I’m so glad I did! It’s very good!

Sea Power is new (it was released in Early Access two months ago, so it’s not complete yet). It’s cool, if you’re into such genres as “Cold War Turns Hot” and naval simulations. I’ve written a few posts about it…no review, though. I’m saving that for when Triassic Games says they’re done with the game. Judging by its depth and breadth, it’s going to be a while.

Those darn trees, they always pop out at the worst time! My answers:
Q1 – I needed to move my truck a few feet to let my Dad out of our driveway, and decided to pop the e-brake and push it instead of driving it (I was 19, cut me some slack). I moved it fine, but proceeded to miss the brake with my foot and ended up on the ground underneath with a twisted leg. Thankfully the open door caught our gate and stopped it from rolling over me, but my Dad told everyone ‘he ran himself over’ until the day he died.
Q2 – Rocket League. Rocket League. Rocket League.
Q3 – I shuffle poker chips nonstop until everyone within earshot hates me.

Kymber @booomcha February 7, 2025 - 9:16 am

Don’t they, though?

LOL Dad’s are good at that! haha

These are my answers

Did you ever hurt yourself in an embarrassing way? I’ve always been interested in the night sky, the stars and the planets. One time I got so taken by the night sky while driving my moped that I drove off the road and crashed into a potato field. I was looking up instead of on the road. I was 15 years old at the time.
What are the time-wasters you typically do? Watching videos on Instagram and Facebook
What quirky behavior do you do under stress? I get quiet and I silently curse under my breath in both Swedish and English.

In my first job, i was taking bread out of an oven, when the shelf collapsed, I put my hands out to save the bread, and burnt my arm pretty bad. My manager, while putting water on my arm, said, “what made you think bread was more important than you?” I dont know, bread is sacred.
Currently reading magazines, I have Readly, a magazine app, and they gave me half price for 6 months, so I’m trying to read as many as possible to save even more money. I will win at capitalism.
I’m a big fidgeter and mover thanks to ADHD. Basically everything I do under stress, boredom, under or over stimulation is deemed quirky. I have been known to stim in my sleep, I guess sleep is not engaging enough for my brain.

I entered the Pig and Whistle Bar in Boston (The model for Cheers) which had a long stairway from the door to the bar. One step and I caught my heel on the stair and fell down the flight of stairs into the bar. The bouncer was going to toss me for being drunk till I pointed out the heel of my shoe still caught on the top stair. Had free drinks all night.
Instagram is my time waster.
I tend to drum my fingers under stress. I finally
got control but remember it was quite apparent that things were not going well.

Q2: Nintendo Switch is one big time waster, but such fun. My backlog is huge 🫣 Phew 😉don’t tell my wife 😉

Ah lovely questions as always Kymber, thank you.

I am sorry for your tumble into a tree, that must have hurt…ouch.

Yes I once tripped one ankle over other ankle and tumbled down a few steps. Nothing serious but it was a large public space. All good though many people came to my aid. And after a rest of my bruised pride. I was right as rain.
I agree word games are fun and a pleasant way to spend time, not really a waste, I think though.
I fold my arms and tap my feet to imaginary music.

Thanks Kymber. Have a good one!

I’m always bumping into stuff, too. One fairly recent one was at the grocery store. There was something spilled on the floor and I slipped and fell in it, pulling the grocery basket down with me. Turned out it was clear liquid fabric softener. So slippery, but I smelled really good covered in it. Strange thing was absolutely no one came to help me up. I was sore for days.
Is it more embarrassing when someone sees you do it or do you look around hoping no one saw it! haha 🙂
Next one – I play some computer games every day, and color in coloring books
Can’t think of anything unless mumbling to myself if I’m stressed.

The most embarrassing injury when I was a kid sort of had to do with a boy. I spent the night with a friend and I thought her older brother was the cutest boy I’d ever seen. Anyway, we made hot chocolate that night and I burned my hand badly, but pretended nothing was wrong. I didn’t sleep all night because my hand burned so bad, but I didn’t want her brother to know I’d done it. Stupid for sure! My biggest time waster is Wordle. I love it and play it every morning while I drink coffee. I’m not sure I have any quirky behavior when under stress unless crying counts.

Reply
Kymber @booomcha February 6, 2025 - 1:33 pm

Wordle is fun!

Crying counts, I reckon. 🌺

Mine was about boys too. I was trying to hang with my younger brother and his friend and fell down a concrete draining wall falling into the muddy water in my white pants! The friend’s mother washed them for me so I wouldn’t get spanked when I got home.
Facebook and online game apps like Words with Friends, etc.
I have been blessed not stressed for a while now so I don’t remember what I did, haha.

Hahaha!!! Dad’s are like that, aren’t they? Happy timezones to you, as well!! Here are my answers.

We were in Galveston, TX, on a “ghost tour” of The Strand (the historic shopping area). As the group was crossing the street, I had looked up at a window in the side of the building we were passing, and observed someone looking down at us as we walked. While I was looking up (oh, how I wish I would learn that it’s never a good idea to look up while walking), the sidewalk disappeared out from under me, and I fell flat. You see, all the curbs in Galveston are at least a couple feet higher than street level, because of hurricanes. I didn’t hurt myself too badly, but the camera that was hanging around my neck did not survive me falling on it. My hands got scuffed up pretty badly.
I play word games, too, mostly the ones from the NY Times (Wordle, Strands, Connections, The Mini, and Spelling Bee). But I also play Golf Clash on my phone, and I play video games, usually on the PS 5, sometimes on my PC. The worst is when I mindlessly scroll reels on Instagram. I love to read, but don’t consider that wasting time.
I don’t know that I have an answer to that one, because I’ve never really paid attention to what I do when I’m under stress. I’ll have to ask my wife if she has noticed anything.

Have a wonderful day, Kymber!

PS, I just bought your book on Kindle!

Reply
Kymber @booomcha February 6, 2025 - 12:11 pm

I wouldn’t worry too much about being short with people when you’re stressed. I think that’s a reaction for a lot of people. And the ones near to you probably understand you’re stressed out.
