Prompt: The Great Dane @ My Door

AM at “A Weirdo With…” blog has written an interesting writing prompt that I thought I would try. There is no set deadline for this prompt, so feel free to join in!

Here is a link to the prompt: A New Shot at My Writing Prompt

And, here is the prompt itself: “Bob was sitting on the couch, eating potato chips and watching some TV. Then the doorbell rang. He opened the door and there stood a huge black male Great Dane. The dog wanted to come in.”

Shall I get started?

The Great Dane at My Door

Bob was lazing on the couch in his underwear, drinking beer and eating potato chips while he watched some TV. The doorbell rang, and he frowned. Heaving himself off the raggedy sofa, he opened the door. There stood a huge black male Great Dane, whining and scratching at the mat. Bob thought maybe the massive dog wanted to come in.

“Where did you come from?” Bob asked.

Much to his surprise, the dog answered him. He didn’t move his mouth, but Bob could hear him in his head!

“My name is Biggie Danish. And you’re Bob.” When Bob stood there, his mouth slack, but still said nothing, the dog continued, “Right. Shall we get on with things now?”

And he pushed his way in, past Bob, snorting up the rest of Bob’s potato chips from the floor and couch cushions.

“Uh, what’s going on right now?” Bob stammered.

“It’s a palindrome.[1] Did you know?”

“W-what?”

“Your name. It’s not a very good palindrome. I mean, not as great a name as Tacocat. Go ahead, say tacocat backward and it’s a terrific palindrome.”

“Why are we talking about this?” Bob asked, scratching his head. “I mean, why am I talking to a dog?”

Biggie Danish grinned at him. “Are you?”

“W-hat?” Bob stammered again.

“Are you talking to a dog? Besides, if I could talk, why would it be to you? Why not my person?”

Bob rubbed his eyes and groaned, “This is ridiculous.”

“Yes,” Biggie said. “It is pretty crazy. Oh wait, maybe you are crazy… or drunk!”

Bob stared at the huge Great Dane in his living room for a full two minutes before turning on his heel and walking up the stairs to his bedroom. When he woke up, the dog would be gone. Right? Nothing more than an alcohol infused delusion.

But, if Biggie Danish was still there when he came back downstairs in the morning, freshly showered and sober… he reckoned he was nuts after all.

That was a fun and creative story. It reminds me of when I heard a scratch on the front door and when I opened the door there was a big Leonberger standing there. He just quietly nd calmly walked right in. It was Bronco. I had no idea how he got out. We have a seven feet fence and a locked metal gate and all doors were closed. But there was no telepathy and it was no delusion.

Kymber Hawke August 28, 2024 - 7:23 pm

LOLOL Oh, I’m laughing! That sounds just like Bronco. 😀

Reply
Pooja G August 28, 2024 - 4:57 pm

Where did you come up with the name Biggie Danish?😆

Reply
Kymber Hawke August 28, 2024 - 7:21 pm

The name “Great Dane” is the English translation of the French name for the dog: “grand Danois” which means “big Danish”. So I decided to call him Biggie Danish. LOL

I have a new prompt in the works too. I got a great idea for them, but who knows how many I’ll come up with. It’s a fun idea nonetheless.

Kymber Hawke August 29, 2024 - 6:50 am

I always say, just have fun. If something comes to you, use it. But if it feels like drudgery to come up with new ones, it’s okay to wait until you’re ready. 🙂 I hope that makes sense. It’s not even 7am here yet. LOL

AM August 29, 2024 - 6:51 am

Yeah, of course. That’s a given 😊

Oh, you’re up early. I hope you’ve slept well.

Kymber Hawke August 29, 2024 - 6:58 am

For once. LOLOL And thank you. The Mister’s alarm goes off at 4:30 am and I figure I may as well get up, too. 😀

AM August 29, 2024 - 9:05 am

Oh, that’s really early.

Debbie D. August 28, 2024 - 10:12 am
