Katy was a few minutes late getting off the bus and coming home. At the time, we lived in a house on four acres in the woods. The dogwood trees were so thick, It almost looked like pretty white snowflakes.
I could see the bus stop from my front door, but I watched as Katy dipped onto a trail between trees. After a few steps she stopped, and slowly bent, while reaching out to something near the ground. Once something had caught her attention, she became engrossed. A few minutes later, I called for her to come indoors.
Her big blue eyes were lit with excitement as she came inside. “Momma, momma!”
“For heaven’s sake, what?” I answered with a smile on my lips.
“There’s a black squirrel in the woods and he almost let me pet him!”
Now I was frowning. “Black squirrel? We don’t have black squirrels around here.” Or did we?
“Yes, his name is Devon.”
Devon was also the name of our neighbor boy.
“That’s a nice name,” I said as I realized she must be imagining this encounter with the black squirrel named Devon. I helped her out of her school clothes and into some play clothes.
“Momma, he was so beautiful! He was black all over with a white stripe down his back!”
My little daughter had been enticing a skunk into letting her pet him!
“Honey, that’s a skunk. And you shouldn’t go near them. Ever.”
She smiled up at me. “He told me he was a squirrel.”
“Well,” I said, wiping my hands across my apron, “let’s stay away from squirrels in general, but especially the ones who are black and have white stripes.”
“Okay, momma,” she called over her shoulder as she ran outside to play on the swing set.

Happy timezones, friends! Welcome to another adventure with my children! I have a lot of memories and nowhere to put them, so I think this is a good spot.
