The Magic of Childhood: Dandelions and Discoveries

The new neighbor walked them home because they kindly came to meet her. She guessed the children were about three and five, and she had already met their momma.

The little girl, the younger of the two, wore a pretty little dress and had bare feet. She stopped along the way to pick a dandelion here, another weed there, sure that her momma would love her growing bouquet.

The five year old had his shoes on, the neighbor finding out he didn’t like to get dirty. He was tall for his age, but he still had the innocence of a five year old in his eyes.

The neighbor said, “Oh, look! The sun is setting. We’d better get you home.”

“Actually,” the boy said, standing straighter as he stopped walking, “the sun doesn’t set. The earth just moves around it.”

The neighbor was surprised to hear this from such a small child. She looked to the girl to see what she would say about all of this.

The little girl grabbed her hand and brightly said, “I eat dirt!”

Happy timezones, friends! In this story, I am the momma that heard about all of this later that evening as the next door neighbor visited. She could barely stop laughing long enough to tell me about her conversation with Jimmy and Katy.

I was smart enuff to write down some of these funny moments from my kids and I love looking back to read them. I wish I had taken the time to do so with the first two kids. But life was busy and I was young and dumb.
