Happy timezones, Friends! It’s movie time! However, this film is not for everyone. Today, we’re talking about Nosferatu, an excellent movie from 2024 by Robert Eggers. I give this one a 5/5!

I’ve been a fan of vampire horror since I was about twelve, never missing an episode of Sir Graves Ghastly double feature on Saturdays.
While being a horror fan, I’m not overly big on bloody content. Mostly, I enjoy ghost stories. But this movie caught my eye.
Back in 1922, the movie Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (Original title: Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens) was the first incarnation of this film. And, if you have ever seen it, well, it’s pretty creepy.
Back then, the creator of that film wanted to make a Dracula movie, but he didn’t want to pay for the royalties such an undertaking would incur. So he changed the story just enough to avoid such expenses.
What I can tell you is that the 1922 version, the 1979 version, and the 2024 version have a very similar plot to Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula.
This movie is beautifully shot. I would watch it just to see all the cinematography, and how it builds suspense throughout. In one week’s time, The Mister and I have watched Nosferatu twice, and it was well worth the time.
I won’t dwell on the story because you probably already know it, and I want this review to be spoiler free. So, let’s talk about the acting.
Lily-Rose Depp (Ellen Hutter) was a wonderful surprise! I didn’t know what to think of her or her talents as I haven’t really seen her in anything before. Suffice it to say, she is wonderful! You can tell she worked hard to achieve the movements and facial expressions that were required of her. I can’t really see anyone else in this role.
I wasn’t sure how Nicholas Hoult (Thomas Hutter) would do in this type of role because I’ve mostly seen him in rather comedic period pieces. But he shows his depth of acting here quite nicely.
Bill Skarsgård (Count Orlok) is a wonder! Each movie I see him in, he is more fantastic than the last, and I would say watch Nosferatu just to see his performance. He is unrecognizable in a good way. His voice and accent are something right out of the pages of Dracula.
The story is good, but familiar. Even so, there are many reasons to watch this film. I’m becoming a fan of Robert Eggers who also wrote and directed The VVitch: A New-England Folktale which I felt was also a masterpiece in cinema.

I swear they are running out of ideas or Hollywood seems to think every generations needs another remake of the so called classics. I watched Nosferatu as a young adult and will not watch another take on it. I am glad you liked it. (I can’t leave comments on your website only in the reader)

I’m not a fan of such movies, honestly. Because almost every horror film is somewhat based on real life experiences.
I assume you know that Dracula was inspired by Vlad the Impaler.
To be honest, the trailer made me think of Emily Rose, and I’m not sure why.

Vlad was a psychopath, but eventually he met his fate, which was beheading.
It took me a good amount of time to forget her story, but the trailer brought back memories.

I enjoyed this movie because Dracula was modeled after Vampires from folklore who were not beautiful and sly- they were feral and did look like – well, death warmed over. I also liked the way the characters reacted to ‘the plague’- which wasn’t exactly what one would call heroric.!
Yes, I know what you mean. That’s one of the reasons I like it, too. Dracula was never meant to be a romantic figure. I mean, yuck! lol He’s a monster, and feral as you said. I agree with what you said about the characters and their responses to the plague. So true.

Sounds like a much needed win for the genre after things like Twilight and the movie (forgot the title) that was a Dracula origin story and tried to make him a sympathetic anti-hero.
Yes, exactly right! Dracula is a monster, the undead. He is not a romantic figure. I like that you said this about Twilight and Dracula Untold.
The funny thing with the Twilight saga is that the author originally wrote it as a story about Feyfolk. That’s where the sparkling nonsense comes from. The publisher didn’t think it would sell and insisted the characters become vampires and werewolves, lol.
