The Last Embers of Night

On a dim balcony,
cloaked in shadows,
the weary vampire surveys his realm.
Bats spiral into the twilight,
winged echoes of life unclaimed.

Once a prince, fierce in battle,
now he wanders through barren streets,
haunted by the whispers of adversaries lost,
fate’s cruel jest leaves him thirsting for more,
but no pulse quickens beneath his gaze.

With passion ignited by the chill of dusk,
he must seek new shores; England beckons to him.

This one I must read many times in order to get it. He has his history and present but he seems to have the future too. I was thinking does he have a new start and what kind of. About month ago I watched all seasons of The Vampire Diaries. The Vampire brothers actually had an interesting end. Great poem!

They sure did. I watched that show, too. 🙂

I kind of based this poem on Bran Stoker’s Dracula. In the book, Dracula basically runs out of people to feed upon, so he moves to England.

I see. I have read BS Dracula, it’s kinda classic in this genre. But I sensed something in his future when it comes to your poem, maybe he wants to change, who knows 🙂

I think your character (Vampire) thinks he is doomed to be what he is but inside his innermost self he feels and even knows that there is the way out of it and therefore he wants to go forward and change his future. He knows he can do it. Your poem is excellent, it teaches us to look at the bright side of life 😊

The irony to be in the thick of battle only to “live” long enough to walk on “barren streets.”
Gorgeous.

An interesting and creative take on being a vampire. A sadness for the things he lost.
