Chapter 9.18: Dear Diary, Is it Love?

From the Journal of Sebastian Woodbury…

… The image of Sophie was burned in my mind as I traveled to St. Clare to be with her. Even though I would never forget the imprint of Sophie’s every movement, I could no longer feel her in my blood as I could when I was a vampire. So the picture of her was all I had.

When I finally arrived, her car was parked outside, and I stood there for endless minutes wondering what I should say or do. My body from head to toe thrummed with the vibration of being so near to her.

After a time, I pulled my phone out, hesitating, my fingers just above the keypad. Taking an exaggerated breath, I dialed her number.

“Hello?”

She answered on the first ring as if expecting me. Suddenly, I choked up because everything I wanted so badly was right there in front of me for the first time in my long life. What if Sophie didn’t love me the way I loved her? Perhaps she wouldn’t even want to see me.

But I had to try, didn’t I? I’d gone through so much just to get to this moment.

“Seb, is that you?”

I cleared my throat. “H-hi, Little Beehive.”

As soon as the words were out, heat filled my cheeks. Why had I called her that when her true name was so beautiful?

“Hi. Boy, it’s nice to hear your voice. I was getting worried when I didn’t hear from you. How are you?”

My heart leaped in my chest as my hope grew.

“I’m doing good. Fantastic even. How are you?”

Once she assured me she was well, I took another long breath and took the plunge.

“Hey, um, I have a surprise for you… outside.”

“Outside?”

I chuckled softly, and nodded even though she couldn’t see me.

“Yes.”

“Well, okay,” she said.

After what seemed like several minutes, she finally emerged from the house, looking as beautiful as ever.

Then, she saw me…

From the Diary of Sophie Noble

Dear Diary, when I came outside the house, Seb was standing there, waiting for me. The first and only thing I noticed was his eyes. They were the most beautiful, deep brown I’d ever seen. And there was no glow!

I tried to speak, but my mind was racing. “Your eyes…”

He smiled, his grin wider than I’d ever seen.

“Your eyes,” I repeated with more emphasis.

Nodding, he said, “I’m cured, Sophie. I’m human.”

My jaw fell slack while I took in this new information and touched his arm, which was warm. I could even feel the pulse in his wrist as I held it.

“How? How did this happen?”

“It’s a long story, one I will tell you, but not now. I just want to look at you. I feel like it’s been so long.”

Tears escaped the corners of my eyes and I blinked them away. “This is wonderful.”

We stared at each other for what seemed an eternity, neither of us able to move as we spoke words of love with our eyes.

Then, at last, I couldn’t take it anymore, and I opened my arms to him.

Standing there, I savored the feel of him, the smell of him. My fingers slipped into his hair as we embraced, our cheeks next to each other. I couldn’t get over how warm his skin was and enjoyed breathing in the scent of his sandalwood shaving cream.

His face lingered before mine, and I realized this kiss we were about to share would bind me to him forever. I wanted this man for the rest of my life.

He waited there, our lips almost touching as if he was savoring this moment as long as he possibly could.

Then our lips touched, just scarcely tingling with electricity and the embracement deepened until I didn’t think we could be any closer to one another.

But I was wrong about that. We raced inside and got much closer.

The next days passed quickly with Seb, Amy, and I in our own little world. Seb told me a little bit about what he’d been through, reassuring me that everything went well for him. His father was on board with changing him back once he saw how much Seb wanted a human life with me. I was glad he hadn’t experienced anything horrible in his quest to become human, and I was thankful he was all right and here with me.

While Sebastian was away, I first stayed at the beach house in Sunlit Tides. I’m embarrassed to say I dated around a little and really enjoyed clubbing. Seb knows this, of course, since he could sense it all as it was happening. And he’s okay with it. Honestly, even if he wasn’t okay with it, it doesn’t matter because I needed a time in my life to be young and free since I’d never had the chance before.

After retreating to St. Clare, I legally changed my last name to Noble so that Amy and I would have the same surname. It was important to me since she was being raised as my daughter instead of my niece.

Amy was quite taken with Seb and even called him daddy. We were going to be married, and so I figured this was all right, too.

My mom stayed at the beach house, where she was more comfortable. I didn’t want to leave her, but I knew she was in excellent hands with her faithful friend and caregiver. Mom was in her own world, where she thought Amy was her daughter Gigi. I supposed she would never accept that Gigi was dead.

And now, it was Amy’s birthday…

What a beautiful child she was. Something in her expression, though, told me she was going to be a handful!
