We took my parents to Amish Country in Shipshewana, Indiana for our vacation, and it was such a sweet little getaway. Horses and buggies clip‑clopped through town, the food was delicious (the pies especially), and every shopkeeper we met was so friendly. It felt like stepping into a quieter rhythm for a few days.

Once we arrived, we met my aunt, uncle, and our long‑time family friend Clara for dinner at the Blue Gate restaurant. The Mister went classic with ham, mashed potatoes, and green beans, while I chose homemade noodles. Dessert was lemon meringue pie for him and chocolate cake for me — no regrets on either side.
The hotel was a bit of a disappointment for Dad. We didn’t get the larger room we’d reserved because those are all on the second floor, which we didn’t know when we booked. Instead, we ended up in a handicap‑accessible room on the first floor. It was cramped and outdated, but clean, and that mattered most to me.

On our second day, we wandered through the shops along the main street. Most of the items were Amish‑made, and I came home with a coffee‑scented candle, a little cardinal figurine for my future kitchen, and a magnet — The Mister and I always get one when we travel.
A storm rolled in that afternoon, so we spent a cozy few hours at the hotel playing Rook, which is similar to Euchre. We were all ruthless, but Dad and The Mister (teamed up, of course) won. Mom and I came close, though — close enough to make them sweat.
Wednesday evening at seven, we went to the Jimmy Fortune concert. Have you heard of him? Mom has wanted to see him for years. He performed with his group, Brothers of the Heart, and they were incredible. Her favorite moment was their performance of “The Lighthouse.” Bradley Walker sang lead with his rich baritone, and then Jimmy came in with that soaring tenor — it gave us chills.
They played for over two hours, and afterward we stood in line for autographs and photos. Mom had two pictures signed and was absolutely glowing. I don’t think she slept much that night.

The next morning, we met Clara again for breakfast at the Essenhaus in Middlebury. If you’ve never tried Amish peanut butter, you must — it’s heavenly. You can get it from Das Dutchman Essenhaus. And while you’re at it, pick up Dutch Blitz. I grew up playing it and buy a new deck every time we visit. They have Dutch Blitz expansion packs, too.
After breakfast, we started the three‑hour drive home, tired but happy, carrying that soft, contented feeling only a simple family trip can give.
Trips like this remind me that the simplest days often hold the richest stories. The kind that linger like candlelight long after we’re home.

One of my FAVORITE old hymns of all time!! And I love the base lead on this rendition!
❤️&🙏, c.a.
That is awesome! Isn’t it a great song? I’m so glad you enjoyed the Brothers of the Heart rendition.
Homemade noodles, chocolate cake, and peanut butter? You and I would get along just fine, Kymber – unless we fought over the chocolate, lol. Looks like a fun trip!
We could share reading material, too, as I like your genres a great deal. That cake was soooo good! lol
Sounds like a wonderful trip, my friend.
Thank you. It sure was. 🩷🌸
How delightful!! And I just ordered a bunch of stuff from that store, including the recommended peanut butter. I’ll let you know how it is. 💜
Wow, Jeff, that’s awesome! I hope you like it as much as I do. Did you get Dutch Blitz? Just curious. It’s a fun game.
I did! I’m looking forward to seeing what that’s like. I got peanut butter, microwave popcorn, pecan and cashew crunch, apple butter (I LOVE apple butter!), and the card game.
Awesome! We wear the cards out and have to buy a new set whenever we are in the area. 😀
This sounds like an amazing holiday, the type of holiday I would enjoy
It felt pretty amazing. I hope you get to go on holiday and have a great time!

No worries at all, my sweet friend. xo
I grew up in Northeastern Ohio- and miss visiting the Amish community. And you could not be any more right about the delish-osity of their pies!!!

You’re welcome, Kymber.
What a lovely place, we only know the Amish from what we heard about them and movies💗That song is beautiful, we don’t know the singer, but Grandpaw probably does, he’s the country boy in our house😸Double Pawkisses for a Happy Day🐾😘💞
Thank you so much. I bet if Grandpaw knows the singer, he loves this song. 🙂 Double Pawkisses for a happy day to you, too, my friend.
What a delightful trip, felt I was with you folks. Must be a real tonic to have an experience like this.

I lived in Middlebury for about seven years back in the 70s. I had a barn and fences built by Amish craftsmen. We had 10 acres and almost every kind of farm animal. We loved it there, but work had other ideas. I wonder if the ice cream shop is still in Middlebury. They had the best home-made ice cream. Thanks for sharing your trip, Kymber.
It was my pleasure, John. I love that you lived on a farm in Middlebury. It’s so beautiful there. I’m originally from Mishawaka, near South Bend.
Your place sounds really lovely. My dream.
As for ice cream, I ended up getting that in Shipshewana, but I’m sure Middlebury’s is still tops. 🙂
I moved back to Indiana in the late 70s and lived in Granger. I know the Mishawaka/South Bend area well. I also have a degree from Notre Dame
That’s so cool! I love Notre Dame.
Hubby and I love Amish country when we were in Indiana some years back. The food is heavenly. You made me smile. I’m glad you had a great time.
I linked this post to Awww Mondays. Why not.
Have a fabulous day and week, Kymber. Love and hugs. ♥
Thank you for linking me, Sandee. That’s a terrific idea!
I agree with what you said about Amish country and the food. It’s amazing and so homey. Real comfort at its best.
Have a great week, my dear friend. Love and hugs. xo
