POV: Charlie Rose

The day was overcast, but that didn’t stop someone from enjoying a balloon ride. I’d always wanted to do that, but now that I’m pregnant, I think I’d throw up. Everything makes me throw up these days, although it has gotten better.

And it’s not just in the morning either, like they say. Nope, it hits me anytime, anywhere. The book I read said the morning sickness would go away, but mine lingers. I’m probably being punished for getting knocked up in the first place.

Standing in the fresh air should help, I decide. Where is Erin? She’s late meeting me here at the park high above Hidden Springs.

I took as deep a breath as I could, but someone was roasting hotdogs over a campfire, so I gagged. Luckily, I didn’t blow chunks that time.

Shivering against the chill, I stepped inside the little building that had all the maps and photos of Hidden Springs. There was an aerial view, so I drew on it to show where my Uncle Louis lives at 1 Lake View Way. Erin lives there, too.

Me? They shoved me off to a house older than dirt, and there I rot, waiting to give birth to this thing inside me.

I know I shouldn’t say things like that, but I’m only sixteen… well, I’ll be seventeen when the baby comes.

Remember that movie Alien₁? Where the man has that thing burst out of his chest? I have nightmares about that because that’s what this feels like. It feels like a little alien.

I peeked outside. Erin was finally here, so I burst out of the little building, into the frosty air. We fell into each other’s arms like we hadn’t seen each other in years. Really, it had just been a few months.

Still, tears came to my eyes, and I found myself crying.

“Charlie, what’s the matter?”

I half laughed. “What’s wrong? What’s wrong? There isn’t any good way to have a baby, that’s what!”

Erin cringed. “I know it’s scary, but-“

“-You know what? Don’t even talk to me about this! Not until you have an alien inside of you!”

Her eyebrows went way up, and she grimaced. “An alien?”

I sighed. “Never mind. We have other things to talk about. It’s why I wanted us to meet.”

Erin nodded and moved in closer.

She couldn’t keep her eyes off my belly. I tried to close my coat, but it was too small to button down the front.

“I want you to take it after it’s born.”

She guffawed. “Me? I can’t take your baby!”

“Well, I don’t want it, so you need to figure out what we’re going to do about that. You said you’d help me!”

Erin shifted her weight to the other foot, her face still a mask of surprise. “Well, definitely not me. Not only am I vastly underqualified, Mama would want to know where the baby came from. It wouldn’t be two seconds before she started looking at you.”

I stamped my feet. She was right, but I just wanted a solution to this problem once and for all. It’d been weighing heavily on me. Literally.

“I’ll ask Uncle Louis what we should do to get him or her adopted,” Erin said.

“Are you sure we can count on him?”

Erin rolled her eyes. “That’s the most ridiculous question I’ve heard yet. He’s paid for everything you need and he hasn’t told Mama about it. I’d say he can be trusted. Besides, how am I supposed to know how to get a baby adopted out?”

Her cheeks were red, and there were tears in her eyes. “You know, Mama is beside herself. She has the right to know what’s really going on here.

I shook my head vehemently. “No! That can’t happen. I can’t believe you’d be so selfish to threaten me with Mama!”

Erin looked like I’d slapped her. “I’m selfish? You better rethink that one, sis.”
