The Inheritance

The Inheritance (4): The Ridley Case, con’t. con’t. con’t.

The Ridley Case was taking The Inheritance team a little longer than they’d planned. Because other cases were coming in, part of the team left to address those. Only Xalen, Marty, Rosetta, and Shelly stayed behind. After conferring with one another, the team had an idea which they now brought before Mr. Ridley himself.

“Are you sure that type of thing is safe?” Mr. Ridley asked.

Observing the doubt in Mr. Ridley’s eyes, Xalen realized he would have to sell the idea to him.

“The way we perform the seance, it should be safe. Shelly is an expert at such things.”

“But you mentioned Shelly was leaving.”

Xalen glanced briefly at his daughter Rosetta and Shelly speaking across the room before answering. “This is true. Shelly has been called away to another client we have. But do not be concerned,” he quickly added. “Shelly taught Rosetta the elements of this process and she will do a fine job.”

“Well, if you’re certain…” Mr. Ridley said, his voice trailing off.

“I am absolutely certain that all will be well. It is a solid plan,” Xalen said.

“Are you okay with everything? I wish I could stay but this client can be difficult.”

“I’m very confident I can do this. After all, I was taught by the best.”

Shelly smiled at her young pupil. Rosetta was an odd duck, but Shelly had been teaching the girl what she knew since she was a small child. She had faith in her star pupil now.

As Rosetta had instructed, the room was dark save for the play of candlelight on the table. As Mr. Ridley, Xalen and Marty entered, she instructed them all to sit at the table.

“The circle we are making is very important. As long as you don’t break it, you will be safe.”

Mr. Ridley cleared his throat nervously and nodded. Rosetta already knew her parents would comply. This wasn’t their first rodeo.

“Every seance is different. Sometimes nothing happens at all and everyone is disappointed. But since I’ve already had contact with Clara, I am certain I can at least get her to join us. Hopefully, your late wife will also attend.”

Mr. Ridley was paler than usual but he nodded again. “I miss her so. Will I be able to see her?”

“You never saw Clara, so I do not believe you will see Mrs. Ridley either. But I will let you know if she is here, where she is and what she is saying. Shall we begin then?”

Marty smiled slightly in encouragement toward her daughter even though she was sure Rosetta didn’t need it. As a mom, though, she couldn’t help herself.

“Once I am in a trance, do not touch me or disturb me in any way.”

Rosetta closed her eyes and drew in a deep breath. In a short while, her head tilted forward slightly and her breathing became shallow.

“Clara, if you are here, we summon you to us. Please show yourself to us.”

The summoning went on for quite some time but Mr. Ridley remained as patient as anyone could.

“What do you want?” Clara boomed as her body materialized.

Rosetta opened her eyes and turned briefly to Mr. Ridley. “Clara is here, standing just to your right.”

Turning his head to the right, Mr. Ridley, in a shaky voice said, “Hello, Clara. Marty and Rosetta have told me how upset you are that I have been moving my sweet Violet’s belongings out of the house. I don’t want you to be angry, dear Clara. I was very good friends with your father and I’ve known you all your life.”

“What’s he going on about?” Clara demanded, stamping her foot. “Of course I’m mad! He needs to put Mrs. Ridley’s things back where they belong!”

“What is she saying?”

Marty jumped in before Rosetta could say something that might offend Mr. Ridley. Marty didn’t suppose Rosetta ever meant to be off-putting, but sometimes her matter of fact manner made people… uncomfortable.

“Clara is not… convinced,” Marty hurriedly said.

“I see!” Mr. Ridley turned to the right again to address the ghost he couldn’t see or hear. “Clara, sweet Violet died more than twenty years ago. I’ve been living with her memory all that time. Now, I need to let her go.”

“Nooooo!” Clara’s voice screeched.

“Stop that now,” a clear but quiet voice rang.

“Violet Ridley, is that you?” Rosetta called.

The hair stood up on her arms and the back of her neck as Violet Ridley began to materialize.

“Is Violet here?” Mr. Ridley asked. “Please tell me she’s here.”

Rosetta nodded as Violet pointed at Clara. “Go over there. I have things to say to my husband.”

Marty glanced at Xalen with apprehension and realized he could see Violet, too. He shrugged a little and smiled at her. Whatever was about to happen, he didn’t seem worried.

“Mrs. Ridley, you can’t let him get away with it! He’s trying to get rid of you and we can’t let that happen!”

Mrs. Violet Ridley turned her full attention to Clara and said in a low, calm voice, “You will be quiet and let me speak to my husband. I cannot manage this much longer.”

“What’s happening?” Mr. Ridley asked.

Mrs. Ridley faded momentarily, then came back in full form.

“She has something she wants you to know, Mr. Ridley. She does not have a lot of energy which means she cannot stay for long,” Rosetta said.

“Please, my darling, tell me what you want to say. If you want me to stop removing your things, I will. I will do anything you want! Please, Violet!”

Violet smiled lovingly at her husband and bent toward him as she spoke. “My husband, you are the only man I have ever loved. Even now, I adore you.”

“She still loves you deeply,” Marty said.

“I want you to be free. It isn’t right that you have had to live this way… with my belongings as if I am still here and alive. Clara is my friend, but I didn’t want this.”

“She wants you to remove her belongings and to move on with your life. She never wanted you to live alone with her things untouched. And,” Rosetta’s voice trailed off as the weight of this couples’ love made its way into her heart. She had never been the romantic sort. No, she was goal-oriented. Perhaps this had opened up new possibilities in her mind of what life could be.

“And?”

Rosetta cleared her throat but it was Marty who spoke.

“And, she will always have the deepest love for you.”

Mr. Ridley put a hand over his heart as tears filled his eyes. “My sweet darling, I will always love you. I look forward to when we are together again.”

Mrs. Ridley smiled. It was a smile Rosetta had often seen pass between her parents but until now, its meaning had escaped her. She sat in silence, observing them with wonder. He couldn’t even see his dead wife yet he couldn’t hide how much he missed her.

“She wants you to remove her belongings if that is what you want to do,” Marty gently said.

Violet nodded and then blew a kiss toward the husband she was letting go of.

“Clara,” she said as if it was an order.

The two women took each others’ hands and disappeared in a bright beam of yellow-white light.

All they left behind was an electric current that lingered for a few minutes, then also vanished.

After the lights were turned on and Mr. Ridley had suitably recovered, he shook Xalen’s hand, nodding at Marty and Rosetta.

“I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done here. It seems Clara was out of step with Violet on this matter.”

“Indeed,” said Xalen with a smile. “Clara was the main disturbance. She was moving things that she knew you would notice. She wanted you to believe it was Mrs. Ridley.”

“What was her purpose?”

“To make you uneasy and even scare you,” Xalen said. “She was hoping Violet would draw on that energy and appear. She thought Violet would be as angry as she was that you were getting rid of things.”

“Little did she know that my wife just wanted me to do what made me happy.”

As the men continued to speak, Rosetta had many things to consider. Her first seance was under her belt and it had gone pretty well. On top of that, she was a front row witness to the depths love could go. Did she want to experience that? Before now, the answer would have been a resounding no.

She would have to ponder this further.

Author’s Note: This is the conclusion of the Ridley Case! I hope you liked it!

If you come directly to the site to read the chapters instead of the WordPress Reader, you will have noticed that the site has changed. Basically, what I did was turn this into what is called a “One Page Website.” What that means is that most of what you need is right at your fingertips. I hope you’ll enjoy exploring. I still have some tweaking to do, but nothing major. 🙂

Oh! I almost forgot! I’m really sorry that some of you received emails regarding spa posts. I’m not sure why that happened. I uploaded a new theme which was for a spa and somehow the dummy posts that were on the theme ended up being emailed.

Thank you for reading,

    1. Hello there! 😀 I’m so glad we found each other’s sites! I can’t wait to delve into your story!

You can find the continuation of my story by putting https://booomcha.com/ into your address bar in your browser. That’s where my new site is and all the continuations of the stories are there.

Let me know if there is something I can help you find. 🙂

  1. So, love can survive even death. That is kind of romantic. It’s a very good eye opener for Rosetta, yes. It’s nice to have someone to go through life with.

  2. That was such a sweet and satisfying conclusion to the Ridley case! <3 I hopr Mr Ridley will finally be able to carry on with his lifee until he and his beloved (gorgeous) wife meet again!
Hm hmmm… Rosetta! Ya dummy, I really hope the ship has not yet sailed for you, I really do..! But then again, that girl can mostly make anything she wishes true, so I hope this will be the case now too! 😉

    1. I’m so glad you like how this case ended. I think Mr. Ridley will do well now that Clara isn’t messing with him anymore and now that he knows his wife is waiting for him. <3

LOLOL I love your comment about Rosetta. I hope that will be the case now, too. haha

  3. That’s a successful seance for Rosetta, she seemed to do very well with her first one. Shelly must be an awesome teacher, I’m sure.

That’s interesting that this case opened Rosetta’s eyes regarding love. Not surprised she never had that revelation seeing her parents. When you see something all your life, it can be normalized and you don’t realize how truly special or unusual it is.

  4. lol I didn’t think it would end like this, sound like my story. People calls your for a very serious case and in the end it was their own mistakes or relatives lol !! I am dead !!

    1. LOL It’s funny how it can turn out. LOL All the time, Clara was acting against Violet’s will. If she had just left things alone, there would not have been a haunting in the first place. LOL

      1. Indeed you have to plot with ghosts but I really like the end. So unexpected .
Clara was convinced to turn Violet against his husband she loves, she didn’t understand that friendship doesn’t mean or to be necessary a twin person?
Clara did not has to sneak on Violet’s stuffs. Only Violet might decided and she took the right decision.

  5. A lovely ending to the case! Violet was quite beautiful too 😀
Ooooh… wiggles eyebrows I see this has opened up Rosetta’s field of vision. I hope this musing of hers might help her become more empathetic — I’m excited to see how she goes about this new thought!

    1. Thank you, Lila. 🙂 I’m glad you liked how the case ended.

Yes! Rosetta might expand her horizons! Wouldn’t it be nice if she softened up a bit? lol

  6. I wonder…will Rosetta seek love on this crazy ghost hunting journey? Only time will tell. I hope she finds someone. Maybe then that will make her a little less uptight. Also, I’m glad it wasn’t just me getting those emails. I thought I was being hoodwinked! Good to know it was just an accident. 😉

    1. Thank you, Rosie. 🙂 Oh, those emails are killing me. I have changed my theme countless times and that’s never happened. :O

It would be great if Rosetta could find love. I have a feeling she has a ways to go before she could let herself go, but as you said, only time will tell. 🙂

  7. Hmmmm! Those are some deep and interesting questions you are asking yourself, dear Rosetta! he he he

This new theme is great! Everything is nice and big. 😀

    1. Thank you, Jes2G! 🙂 Rosetta should maybe take a brief chill in her life and look into this romance thing. LOL

I’m glad you like the theme! The options are pretty endless which is why I may be tweaking for a while but I’m happy with how it turned out. 😀

    1. Thank you so much! 🙂 It’s nice to see Rosetta loosen up even if it’s slightly. LOL Hopefully, romance will find her.

  8. They really do love each other. I’m glad the case ended well and Clara could see that Mrs. Ridley just wanted what was best for her husband. Maybe Rosetta will allow her caring side to come out more often now? She does seem interested in finding love

    1. Thank you, Raymond. 🙂 I’m glad the case ended well, too. I think it was important for Rosetta to see this. Perhaps she will consider finding a love of her own. 🙂

  9. I really enjoyed the last chapter! It will take a special kind of guy to handle Rosetta if she decides she wants to pursue a romance some day. I don’t mean ‘handle’, but you know what I’m getting at. She wants to be in charge, so it would have to be someone she would be willing to share that “power” with, and learn to compromise with. At least she’s giving it some thought! ♥

    1. Thank you, Marj. 🙂 I’m so glad you enjoyed the conclusion of this case. You’re definitely right about how it has to be a special guy to take Rosetta on. I imagine she would drive her partner up the wall otherwise. haha

It’s the thought that counts. Hopefully, she can pursue some romance.

  10. I wonder if you could call The Inheritance chapters similarly to normal chapters, something like first case being first generation. That way you wouldn’t have to say “cont.cont.” so many times. It’s up to you, though.
Ah, I loved how it was an eye-opener for Rosetta. The depth of love the Ridleys share is moving and it touched her, too. Even her. This sentence, though: “As a mom, though, she couldn’t help herself.” The beginning of a seance is a great time for Marty’s maternal feelings to come out, lol.
I really enjoyed reading about this case and look forward to the next one. ♥

    1. Oh! LOL I did the “con.’t” thing like that because I was being silly. I’m not planning on that again. hahaha

Even Rosetta cannot go without love forever, right? Well, let’s hope not. Being in love might soften her up a bit. I like how you said it touched her. Even her. Because that is so true.

      Yeah, thanks, Marty! LOL

  11. I think they all must be very brave to solve these cases of ghosts and whatnot. I don’t personally believe in ghosts, but I’m not brave enough to go anywhere there have been “sightings” or perform a seance lol. It’s nice that Mr. Ridley can move on, and interesting that Rosetta has opened her eyes to the possibility of romance. Though I hope Chris isn’t on her mind because I really like what he has going with Julie at the moment! And I think Rosetta needs someone stronger willed than Chris. Someone who can handle her the same way Marty did in this chapter lol.

    1. Thank you, Jess. 🙂 I’m not sure I believe in ghosts either, although, I’ve had some strange experiences in the past. Oh, wouldn’t that be the worst if Rosetta decided to pursue Chris? I’m not sure I could make even Rosetta stoop that low. lol I really do like Chris with Julie, too. And I totally agree about the type of man she needs. Chris was definitely not strong willed enough.

  12. Aw, that was a really sweet ending. Both the Ridleys’ great love for each other, and Rosetta realising she might want something like that 🙂 A great conclusion!
And your new layout looks great, Kym! 🙂 It’s still easy to find your way around, and I like the pages you’ve made for your stories and such. Super nice! <3

    1. Thank you, Louise. 🙂 I’m so glad you liked the conclusion of the Ridley Case. I hope Rosetta decides that a little romance would be a good thing.

I’m so glad you like the layout, too. I was really pulling my hair out to get everything set up before today. Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it.

      1. I’d love to see Rosetta get some romance on 😀

I understand – considering the hair pulling I’ve been doing (and am doing… sigh) to get my stuff up. You did awesomely, as always <3

        1. Thank you so much. I think it might be nice having Rosetta finding some romance in her life.

We can commiserate together on this hair pulling mission we’re on. LOL

    1. Thank you so much, Jolie. 🙂 I’m glad you liked the ending. Perhaps Rosetta will now expand her horizons in life. 😀
