What Makes a Good Queen

What Makes a Good Queen

So many responsibilities
Resting on tiny shoulders
The King’s sudden death
Meant the heavy crown was hers.

She’d been brought up to rule
But why so soon?
Why had her father died?
It was her first day, and noon.

Her stomach felt heavy,
As did her head,
She had to push through it
Even though she wanted to hide in bed.

To others, she appeared
Steady and unemotional
But inside she was warring
To seem cool and impartial.

Unknown to her now,
She would be a good queen
Always insistent that
No one be mean.

  3. Kymber, a great poem for a striking image! I like how you reach into her personal angst, the heaviness of the duty ahead and yet a rule that would be full of kindness.

  4. What a huge responsibility! I don’t envy her one bit. You did a great job of describing her inner turmoil. I especially liked the last stanza, for the hope of times ahead. 🌞

  5. I really enjoyed your poem “What Makes a Good Queen.” It beautifully captures the inner turmoil and strength of a young queen stepping up to her responsibilities. The way you describe her struggle to appear composed while feeling overwhelmed inside is both poignant and relatable. Lovely work Kymber!
