What Makes a Good Queen
So many responsibilities
Resting on tiny shoulders
The King’s sudden death
Meant the heavy crown was hers.
She’d been brought up to rule
But why so soon?
Why had her father died?
It was her first day, and noon.
Her stomach felt heavy,
As did her head,
She had to push through it
Even though she wanted to hide in bed.
To others, she appeared
Steady and unemotional
But inside she was warring
To seem cool and impartial.
Unknown to her now,
She would be a good queen
Always insistent that
No one be mean.

I really enjoyed your poem “What Makes a Good Queen.” It beautifully captures the inner turmoil and strength of a young queen stepping up to her responsibilities. After reading about Queen Elizabeth’s untimely rise to leadership, I wouldn’t want to be her. Britain was lucky to have her.
I agree with you wholeheartedly. I think she was amazing. 🩷🌸
