Keith Edwards found his mother in the kitchen when he got home from school. As usual, she was scrubbing until her fingers bled. When his father got home from work, he would expect a clean house.
“Mom, the kitchen is clean.”
She gazed at him with careworn eyes, and when she spoke, it was in a voice softened by the timidity one acquires through years of abuse. “He always finds something.”
“I know he does,” Keith said. “Have you thought any more about what we talked about? I’ve got your back, Mom.”
She hesitated, but knew she needed to stand up for her son, if not for herself.
“Your dad is going away this weekend on a work retreat. We will leave then. I promise.”
The relief in Keith’s eyes was enough to tell her she was making the right decision.
Hopefully, she would keep her word.

This SO needs to happen, like yesterday. Fingers crossed that all goes as planned so they can escape, and let’s hope Angela doesn’t chicken out.
I’m rooting for them!
Woot woot!
Ooooh! I hope he actually goes so they can do this.
Thank you, Jess! Me, too!
I really hope they get out safely! These situations are always so sad.
Thank you, Raymond. You’re so right about that. Hopefully, they get away and lead happier lives.
What a relief! We all got your back girl! Grab your son and go!! A new life awaits, a new love you deserve, a happy home you will have.
Thank you, Bee. I believe in everything you just said!!
What an awful situation to be in. They must be terrified. I really, really hope they get out and that he doesn’t go looking for them either.x
Thank you, Caz. Same here. Hopefully, they will escape without incident.
Another +1 for hoping she leaves that guy in the dust!
Thank you, Louise. I hope she leaves that guy in the dust, too!
Yes, do it girl! Leave his sorry rump. A grown man has no business behaving the way he does.
Thank you, Violincat. You’re so right. Hopefully, her plan works out like she needs it to.
😣 this is a mean cliffhanger. Hopefully they make it out of there and nothing goes wrong.
Thank you so much! 🙂 I hope so, too.
I only hope this whole thing with Kai’s accident won’t throw a wrench in their plans somehow. Like police going from door to door asking Kai’s neighbours some questions.
Thank you, maladi. You are right to be concerned.
You never know what goes on behind closed doors. Hopefully, they get away safely.
Thank you, Jacquie. That’s so true. Leaving is the most dangerous time for someone who is in the midst of domestic violence, but hopefully they will be all right.
cliffhanger. Oooh…
Yep. 🙂 Thank you, Jacqui.
Oh I hope she does follow through. This is a good time to get the plan set and line up resources and back up plans. She can do it.
Thank you, Cathy. I was thinking the same thing about backup plans, etc. It’s when the person being abused leaves that is the most dangerous for them.
I hope they get out of there before he even gets home. Screw him. The sooner they leave, the better.
Thank you, Hilly. That’s true, they need to get out of there quickly!
I love their home its super lovely
Thank you so much, Bree. 🙂
Ohhh. I’m so happy she is getting away. I hope she’s not too late.
Thank you, Audrey. Let’s hope the plan works.
