POV: Senator Louis Cushing
Louis Cushing slipped into the room in silence, his feet barely making a sound on the plush carpeted floor.
Donita heard him, though, and motioned him to close the door behind him. “You’re still stealthy, even at your age.”
He chuckled. “You get further in politics if you can slip in and out of places without being noticed. There are only a few appropriate times to make your presence known.”
She smiled at him. “You mean when the press is there?”
“You catch on quickly, my girl.”
“So,” Donita said, “what did you want to talk to me about?”
He hesitated, but only briefly. “Erin.”
“What about Erin? She’s doing wonderfully.”
Louis nodded. “Yes, she’s becoming a whole new person-“
“-New? No. She is growing and changing, but for the better. I’m very proud of her.”
He held his hands behind his back and gazed at Donita thoughtfully. “She is changing, that’s true. But is it for the best? When I first met Erin, she was shy, had a charming accent, and humorous stories about her life on the farm. Where is all that now?”
“I fail to see the problem, Uncle Louis. She was a country bumpkin, and now she is a strong young woman that can hold her own. There is nothing wrong with that.” She turned, gazing at the Oval Office. “Now that I have won my election in the senate, Erin will go as high as she wants to. Perhaps she will even be Leader of the Free World, and this office will belong to her.”
He thought for a moment, his brows furled. “Keep in mind, Donita, that this is your path, not hers.”
“Unless she wants it,” she answered with a small shrug.
POV: Erin Rose
As I was getting ready to meet Donita at her new office in which I was now her assistant in name and title, there was a knock on the door.
Much to my shock, it was Mama and Kyree, my youngest sister. She had grown so much, I barely recognized her.
We awkwardly stood there for several minutes, each of us looking over the other.
“Uh, hi,” was all I could say, and it sounded so stupid.
“Hello, dear,” Mama said.
No longer was her thin frame wrapped in a cheap cotton dress. She wore a coat lined with fur. Her hair, which was always tied in a tight knot at the nape, was shorter and shiny.
“You seem so different,” she said to me.
Really? “So do you,” I said, waving my hand to indicate her entire look.
“Mama is doing well with Tobin,” Kyree interjected with a meek voice. She reminded me of a little mouse.
“And what about you?” I asked my little sister.
Averting her eyes, she shrugged.
“I just grew up,” she mumbled.
“Erin, we came here to find out where Charlie is,” Mama blurted, her eyes ringed with red.
That’s when I realized she’d been crying.
“What makes you think I know where Charlie is?”
Mama’s back straightened and her eyes narrowed. “You didn’t even ask where she was when we came inside. As far as I know, you would have expected her to be with us.”
Oh, she got me good with that one. What was I supposed to say about Charlie?
Well, Mama, your middle daughter found herself in the family way, and she’s been hiding in one of Louis Cushing’s houses for weeks now, I imagined saying.
Instead, I said, “I thought she might be with Tobin since he’s not here.”
Mama’s eyes narrowed even more and her mouth became that familiar thin line on her face. She knew I was lying.

So many changes! I’m not really worried about Erin’s changes–she’s got such a good heart, she’ll find her way through!
