Erin Rose’s POV
Donita was radiant. We were enjoying our last dance of the evening at a fundraiser that she had spoken at. And I I couldn’t help but stare at her.
She was dancing with her son, and my step-brother, Andy, and he looked happy, too.
We all were supportive of Donita’s dream to enter the political arena. After tonight, she would secure her spot, and her campaign would make history.
I wasn’t eavesdropping or anything, but I was standing nearby the two.
Andy said to his mother, “I’m so proud of you.”
Donita threw her graceful head back, a soft, tinkling laughter coming from behind her smile.
Someday, I would have people look at me as they did Donita.
Yes, I would be the poor little country girl that grew up to be someone important. Someone admired the world over.
Everyone would know my name, and they would comment on all the good work I was doing for people.
But then, I was getting ahead of myself, wasn’t I? I was still in university, about to tour with Donita for the summer. Iβd take some summer classes online so I could graduate early. But I was nowhere near understanding politics the way Donita and her Uncle Louis Cushing did. He’d been a very popular Chief of Staff for Rosetta Sprague’s Off-White House administration.
Speaking of the devil, here he was now, asking me to dance.
I glanced around for Jaron because I thought I should dance with him. But he was dancing with Karissa.
You might think I would be upset that my boyfriend and best friend were slow dancing together, but I pushed any negative thoughts about it out of my head.
I had enough to think about without worrying about that as well. Unless I’d deemed them trustworthy, I would not have allowed them anywhere near me. I was certain neither of them would ever betray the relationships I had with them.
Nodding yes and smiling, I allowed Uncle Louis to bring me out to the floor. He was an excellent dancer, leading well.
“Uncle Louis, you dance wonderfully!”
“Why, thank you, my dear. I’ve had many years to practice.”
I’d already thought of a plan, and I thoroughly believed Uncle Louis was the only one who could help us. It was lucky he’d asked me to dance because now I had an excuse to talk to him.
“After the celebrations are over, may I speak with you? Privately?”
Both his eyebrows raised up toward his forehead and he flashed a bright smile. “Of course. How about after this dance?”
I nodded again, praying no one would be curious about what we were talking about. The last thing my reputation needed was to be seen cornering a powerful old man. My past had to remain squeaky clean if I wanted to avoid scandal during these college years.
Nothing was more important to me than my future in politics.
Donita had asked me not to let power change me. I’d never felt any genuine power before, but I promised her I would always be myself.
But then, there was something more urgent than my future. I had actual problems, right here and right now.
The dance ended, and I followed Uncle Louis into the hall from the ballroom. We walked for a short while before he asked me, “And what can I help you with? I hear from Donita you have your own political aspirations.”
My cheeks felt hot as they turned crimson.
“Yes, I do.”
“Well, then you’re talking to the right man. I know everyone.”
I gulped in a breath as I thought of how useful it was to be sort-of-family with him.
“You’re so kind, but that isn’t what I wanted to talk to you about. Not yet, anyway.”
“Oh?” he asked as we walked.
How do I begin? I thought. Where do I start? With the problem itself?
All at once, I felt embarrassed that I was putting all my eggs in this basket. Why did I think he’d help us? Because he’s Donita’s uncle? Donita didn’t have any relation to me, although I thought of her as a step-mother. She allowed me to live in her house, eat her groceries… she owed me nothing.
“I can tell this is difficult for you. Please, you call me “uncle,” now let me be your uncle.”
His eyes were so kind and filled with concern.
Taking a shaky deep breath, I squared my shoulders. Time to just rip off the Band-Aid, I thought.
“It’s actually my sister, Charlie, who needs your help. You see, she’s…”
The words trailed off. What would he think of my sister if he knew she was pregnant? Would he look down on her? No one had the right to do that!
Uncle Louis stood there, waiting. But when I said nothing, he cleared his throat and asked, “Is Charlie in a family way?”
I was stunned that he’d hit the nail right on the head!
“How can I help? Does your mother know?”
Shaking my head vehemently, I said, “Oh dear Lord, no! And she must never find out. I need to know that Charlie is somewhere safe. Donita and Andy don’t even know she’s been staying in my room. She’s really stressed out, and I need to find her a place where she can quiet her mind and think.”
He smoothed out his mustache with the tips of his fingers, looking thoughtful.
“You know, I grew up on a farm, too. And I still live there. But it will be near empty with only the servants there while you and I are away, touring with Donita’s campaign.”
My eyes were enormous, and I could hear my pulse. “You mean she could stay there?”
“Well, yes. And I have a cook that is quite the motherly type. She could look after Charlie.”
“Maybe Charlie would even enjoy working with the animals like back home?”
“It’s unnecessary, but if she wishes to, that is fine.”
With tears in my eyes, I threw my arms around his neck and cried, “Thank you, Uncle Louis.”
Charlie Rose’s POV
Erin arrived home late last night, but I was still awake with a nasty case of heartburn. I’d never had that sensation before, and it was not making me too happy.
I ate another Tums just before Erin tiptoed into the room.
“Are you sure we can trust him?” I asked after she told me the plan she and Uncle Louis came up with.
“He is the sweetest old gentleman you’ll ever meet!” Erin enthused.
I wasn’t convinced but I did as she instructed, getting dressed and gathering my meager belongings. Meanwhile, she took a shower and got into comfier clothes.
“How much did the necklace you were wearing cost?” I asked her as I picked up the sparkling diamonds. Iβd seen nothing so grand before.
“It belongs to Donita. She let me borrow it. Are you ready?”
It was a little ways to travel so Erin borrowed Andy’s car. Out of the city we drove, then through winding roads to the highest cliff. She stopped the car to admire the view.
“There it is, Charlie. Isn’t it something else?”
Gazing where she was pointing, I couldn’t see a house. Only trees and rocks jutting out of the earth.
“Well, it’s there,” she promised me. “And it will be lovely. Itβs a vast mansion that has been in the Cushing family for generations.”
Clasping my hands together and squeezing, I couldn’t wait to see it!
Uncle Louis had given Erin a spare key to the place before she left the fundraiser, and she used the key now to unlock the door.
Heavy bolts slid, and the door swung inward with a loud groan.
“Oh, my,” was all she said when we stepped inside.
Glancing all about me, I finally murmured, “I thought you said it was some fancy mansion? This place looks like a wreck.”
“Shhh… I don’t know if Uncle Louis is here or not. Besides, liking it or not liking it is not even in this equation. You needed help, and we got it for you.”
“Okay, but it smells like an old man lives here.”
Erin rolled her eyes. “Because he does. Now cool it, will you?”
“Good morning, ladies,” Uncle Louis’s voice boomed from behind us, making me jump a little.
We both returned the nicety, and then he was talking again. “Erin probably told you, but I won’t be here for the summer because I’m traveling with Donita and her campaign. So while you’re staying, you may wander about the gardens and the house as you wish.”
“Thank you, Uncle Louis,” I said.
“Yes, thank you,” Erin repeated. She seemed relieved I wasn’t planning on causing anymore trouble. Or maybe she was relieved she could go back to her life and not have me in her hair. I tried hard not to think about that scenario.
Uncle Louis gave me a light hug, motioned to some kind of butler guy or something to bring his bags, and he left.
“Erin, I’m really nervous about this.”
She pulled her shoulders back and said, “Nonsense. There’s no reason to be afraid. You have this gorgeous old house to yourself. Relax and eat ice cream, okay?”
Actually, she didn’t know it, but since getting pregnant, I’d had an aversion to ice cream. Even so, I nodded in obedience.
“All right, then,” and she hugged me tightly, “call me anytime and if you need anything, I will try to help as soon as I can. And, sis…”
I looked up at her and nodded.
“…Think about if adoption is the best thing for the both of you. I’ll always be here, but don’t make a decision like that because you’re scared. Okay?”
“Okay,” I said, then I watched her go to Andy’s car and drive away.
Grab the Old Stone Button!

Hey my love, please send me the link to your activated website in a comment on my blog so I can see the website With thanks
I will do that now. π
I’m enjoying your story with the graphics, Kymber. The bloopers are fun.
LOL Thank you. π I’m so glad you like it.
Your bloopers made me out right laugh. I’ve often had the exact same thought.
Erin has found herself in a wonderful life situation and she is about to have an eye opening, maturity raising experience travelling with Donita. I can tell you from experience the challenges of being a child of a parent who has a high level position in the government. It offers up many opportunities and frustrations from both sides of the line. I hope she is able to handle it all well. Because of this family, she is now able to offer up assistance to her sister she wouldn’t have had before. I will admit, I’m conflicted whether I want Mamma to find out or now, or even when she should. I see so many different story lines from this one important question. In the meantime, hopefully Charlie realizes how blessed she is from the help she has been provided.
This post I put in my bookmarks again ”quick access”. I will explore your works a bit more carefully.. good post!!
