Charlie Rose’s POV
After a long, uncomfortable trip, I was now standing on the stoop of Erin’s doorstep. She was staring at me now with wide eyes and probably some shock. Which is understandable, since I had shown up out of nowhere.
Sixteen and pregnant. What was I doing with my life?
Almost immediately, my sister rushed me inside, insisting I sit on the couch.
The stuff in this place looks like a granny lives here. Like she collected all these antiques throughout her life and couldn’t let them go.
I realized Erin was staring at me with hard eyes. Great, she would be all judgmental, too.
“Does Mama or Tobin know?”
Shaking my head, my mouth dropped. What kinda fool did she take me for?
“Of course not!”
Erin’s shoulders dipped forward slightly in what I assumed was relief. After a sigh, she plopped down on the sofa, too. At least I didn’t get the sense anymore that she was still on her high horses.
But then she asked me the stupidest question ever.
“How did this happen?”
I looked at her with astonishment, then said, “Well, Sis, we grew up on the same farm. How do you think it happened?”
She grimaced. “That’s not what I meant.”
Now it was my time to sigh. “I know.”
“Who is the father?”
“Do you remember Coy Dawson?”
“You mean the one who grew up sitting on the step into the bar because his mama and daddy were always drinking in there and he had to wait for them?”
Her face turned whiter than a ghost and I couldn’t help but laugh.
“It wasn’t him!” I laughed even though my joke wasn’t very funny.
She hit me with a pillow, then sat leaning on the back of the couch with her legs pulled up under her.
Without being able to control it, tears began slipping out of my eyes and down my face. Erin gave me a tissue, and I dabbed at my eyes and nose.
“I’m sorry if I hurt you with the pillow,” she said, concern filling her eyes.
“I’m a tougher than that.”
“You were always tough. But it’s okay to cry now, Charlie. This situation is just ghastly.”
Erin now looked sympathetic, at least.
“Are Donita and Andy here?” I asked
“Yes, but they’re upstairs sleeping.”
“I want to tell you everything, but I don’t want to chance anyone overhearing,” I confided, worrying at the hem of my shirt with trembling fingers.
“Let’s go outside, okay?” Erin suggested.
I nodded, but we were already walking back outside into the night.
Erin was quiet, so I just started talking.
“The dad is Brody Cooper. We been seeing each other since before you left the farm to come here. Remember, you caught me daydreaming so much when I was supposed to be choring, but I wouldn’t ever tell you what my daydreams were about? Yeah, I was thinking of Brody.”
Erin was staring at her feet, her right hand near her eye. I think she was trying not to cry. Crying or not, I could tell she was still listening intently.
“Just so you know, he didn’t force himself or anything. I thought I should clear that up before we talked any further.” Erin nodded slightly, expelling a slow, steady breath, and I continued. “Brody and I dated a long time and folks around home figured we’d tie the knot someday. But, you know, I’m only sixteen and he’s the same age, only six months older than me.”
I explained to her that neither Brody or I were ready to get hitched. We both wanted things in life. Maybe a family with each, but maybe not, too. Brody and I were confused, and I had left real fast from the farm because Mama and Tobin were supposed to come home from a trip, and I didn’t want them to see me. So, I did the only thing that made sense. I sought out my big sister for refuge and advice.
Could she hide me for a few months until I had the baby and could give it up for adoption? As far as I figured, Mama never had to know anything about it at all.’
“And you think lying to Mama is a good choice in this situation?”
“No!” I exclaimed, holding tears back best as I could. “I think it’s the only choice.”
“The sun is coming up,” Erin mumbled.
We were quiet, and I didn’t know if she’d help me or not. Suddenly, she pulled me into a warm embrace as the sun rose in all it’s beautiful colors.
When Erin let go of me, she pointed to the sky.
“Look over there, above the bridge. Isn’t it pretty?”
“Yes,” I croaked.
“Don’t worry, Charlie. I mean, I know you can’t help it, but whatever happens, I’ll be there with you all the way.”
“Thank you,” I choked out.
As we watched the light coming over the bridge, I felt calmer than I had in months. I hoped Erin would not betray me to Mama. But if she did, my sister would at least still be there for me.
Erin Rose’s POV
Charlie and I were outside almost all night talking because she didn’t want Donita or Andy to overhear. I didn’t blame her, though, for wanting to keep the secret for just a little bit. This was a new situation for the both of us, but I felt at nineteen, I was still too young to know what to do.
I tried my best to get her to tell Mama, but that was a no-go. In fact, she wanted to have the baby and give it up for adoption all without Mama knowing any of it.
We were exhausted when we came back inside, and Charlie was crying again. I led her to the stairs, and we went up to my room, where I instructed her to lie down. She was hungry but not starving, so I showed her a little basket in my room with snack type stuff in it.
Then, realizing the time, I ran to the bathroom for my shower. I had to get dressed and help Donita with her political campaign today.
Finally, rushing downstairs, I joined her just as she was heading for the front door.
“Oh, good, there you are,” she said with a smile. “You have massive circles under your eyes, but don’t worry, we’re meeting the makeup artist first thing and he does wonders with problems like that.”
“Before we leave, I wanted to tell you something,” I said, my voice cracking like a boy’s in puberty.
She dug around in her bag and found the schedule for the day.
“Well, I’ve changed my major.”
“Oh?”
“Yes, to political science.”
She stopped walking and turned to face me. “Why would you do that? I thought you liked your major.”
My cheeks flushed and my eyes lit up as the excitement rose within me. “Because when you were giving your speech at the Innovative Artists Club, your words… they touched my soul! I want to be just like you and do good for others.”
With a huge smile on her face, she hugged me. “I am so proud of you! There’s power, too, and that’s always a good thing.”
I grinned, but I’ll admit I had thought little about having power. My words were true. I wanted to help people, and create things, and do good.
“I support you one hundred percent, Erin, but never let the power corrupt you. Promise me.”
Smiling again, and in all earnestness, I said, “I promise.”

I love the sisterhood and friendship they share!!! I can’t wait to see what happens next. Will she tell momma? Will she keep the baby? will she keep that major and enjoy it? Can’t wait to find out.
Changed her major, to Poli Sci–that’s a surprise!
I thought so, too. I think she’s a bit enamored with Donita and the excitement of the campaign. lol
I’m enjoying your virtual world, Kymber. It feels as if I’m in it.
That’s amazing! Thank you, Mary. I’m so happy you like it!
Well, shoot. Of course, I think they should tell Mama, even though it would be really, really hard and maybe cause some temporary ruptures in the relationship (but I have faith they could be patched), and they might even discover some other options to adoption…
Yes, I agree with you completely, CT. There are definitely other options, and Mama with her wisdom might be more of an ally than they realize.
Poor Charlie. Not a great situation for Erin either but her decision seems sound 🩵
Thank you, Robbie. 🌺🩷 Yes, let’s hope everything works out for them. 🙂
I hope so, Kymber. In my experience, things working out is relative.
Yes, that makes sense.
These have me sucked in. I have feeling Charlie’s secret will come out but love what a good big sister Erin is. I am so hooked now!
YAY! I’m so happy to hear you’re enjoying Old Stone. And that you’re hooked, too! Woot woot!
I can’t wait for you to see what is next.
