Native Son

Native Son by Bryan Adams

I’ve seen many moons through these wrinkled eyes

The years have made me old

But they’ve made me wise

Now the white man lives where our rivers run

For now better days have passed

We walk the streets of broken glass

Our people vanished as snow before the summer sun

Like dogs we were driven from this place

Such injustice, time will not erase

All these changes cannot be undone

When you feel the anger inside of you

Hold your head high – let your aim be true

Though your heart beats like a drum

My native son

Once there was a time my little one

Before the wagons – before the soldiers’ guns

When this land was ours as far as the eagle flies

No white flag – no broken truce

With few words one can speak the truth –

I don’t hear it

Time won’t heal it now

With each new day that comes to pass

Will the great spirit free us all at last?

He said we were the chosen ones

For all we had there’s nothin’ left

We won’t forgive – we can’t forget

You know that your day will come

My native son

With each new day that comes to pass

Will the great spirit free us all at last?

What has happened can never be undone

When I was young – not yet a man

The sun rose and set upon our land

We were the chosen ones

My native son

Written as a response to Kevin’s No Theme Thursday:

Here we are again, putting forth a post for No Theme Thursday: The Return. I love Kevin’s pictures. He’s so creative, and they inspire me!

When I saw this picture, i wanted to write a poem, but all I could think of was Bryan Adams and his 1987 song, “Native Son.” It’s a beautiful song with touching lyrics. I hope you’ll give it a listen.

Old Stone Chapter 13 is coming together, so stay tuned and happy simming….

Thank you so much for reading, liking, lurking, and commenting! You are important!

  1. I remember when this song came out from my countryman Bryan Adams. At the time, it was a bold statement from a performing artist and it has taken Canada a lot of years to get to the point of reconciliation. We are still working on it. It is a lifelong process. Happy Monday Kymber.

  2. Your poem is immense, Kymber. My heart broke as I read it. Native Americans lived for thousands of years in harmony with nature. (They even hunted with wolves, not against them). 💔 A beautiful, poignant and thought provoking poem. 💗

    • Thank you so much, Lesley!🌺This was actually written by Bryan Adams (I can only wish I’d written it. lol). There is so much to learn about Native American culture. 🌺🩷 I’m so glad you stopped by.

  3. Heart wrenchingly beautiful Kymber <3 … Perfect pull for Kevin’s image! Resonates lyrically, visually, and thoughtfully to my heart! Thank you and wish you a wonderful weekend!

  4. Really strong and thoughtful lyrics! I’ve never heard of this artist or this song. I have to give this song a listen! I love finding new song to listen to! I’m always on YouTube listening to music! I gave this artist a little search and I realize he is a rock artist. What’s your favorite genre of music?

    • It’s an oldie, but a goodie.🩷 I was 12 when I first heard Bryan Adams and I’ve been a fan ever since. I hope you like it.

I like all kinds of music, but rock is my favorite. 😀 How about you?

  5. This song was truly underrated and didn’t receive the airtime it deserved. I doubt many people today would be able to handle its lyrics.
