I understand why some people are hard on this genre and say they all have the same tropes and if you’ve read one, you may not feel you need to read any others. But this is my favorite genre of all time, so you better believe I’ve read it!
Give me an old, rambling house and the unsuspecting person who suddenly inherits it, a ghost or two, a suspicious black cat, and much more, well, then, you’ve got me hooked right then and there.
Gothic horror is my jam.
The main character is a man who inherits his grandparent’s house. He moves his wife and two little children there and things are really nice… At first. This is their big chance to move out of the city and raise their young family in a nice little town.
Then, strange things start happening.
Something I think the book did really well is the character development. You care about these people. You hope and pray they all make it to the end of the book unscathed. Because in this genre, they might not! The main character and his wife truly love each other. They are supportive, and they talk things through.
During the story, we also go back in time to when the main character’s father, uncle, and grandparents add to the back story. I loved that!
This is not an easy book to put down once you’ve started. The story was engaging and I was completely absorbed in the characters’ world, biting my nails to the nubs!
Final Thoughts: This book is really good! It’s well-written and a scary story that is paced nicely. It takes a lot to scare me because I’ve read so many haunted house books. So, if it sent deliciously frightening tingles down my spine, chances are, you might feel that way, too.
This is the author’s debut novel, and to that, I say, “Well done!” I am truly looking forward to reading her other book, and I think she has a bright writing future ahead of her.
I gave this 5/5 stars.

an intriguing and tempting review, Kymber . Thanks for the share π·
Gothic horror eh? π± Girl ChickieDee, what a thriller of a review. What a phenomenal delivery of a synopsis that lures even the faintest of hearts right on in girlfriend. What book is this for you for the year so far? Number 952? π Keep on truckin’ baby! πππ
Great review, Kymber, and the book sounds riveting! I’m not into horror, so I think I’ll pass. But how awesome for this to be her debut novel and you gave it 5 stars. But that’s how I felt about yours too, Broken Rhodes, which was so good and worth 5 stars as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! β€οΈ
I like how you described the book as not easy to put down one you got started. When horror and suspense are done well, itβs fantastic to be swept into the story! And I hope Josie Pye approved of the βsuspicious black catβ of the story. π
That does look like an interesting book Kymber. Not a big fan of overt horror, but suspense thrillers are of interest. Happy Thursday. Allan
Sweet, a good use of my Audible token stash! Wonder how my 10 year old will like a good horror story…
It seems like a really exciting book. I love horror books (as well as action and science fiction). Thank you for the introduction and a great review.
I’d like to read that someday, but my tbr stack is high right now!
This is such a creepy good cover, Kymber! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the book.
Wow, your review has me itching to dive into this book Kymber! There’s something irresistible about a good old haunted house tale, especially when it’s infused with solid character development like you described. It sounds like the author really knows how to weave a chilling story while keeping readers invested in the fate of the characters. Thanks for sharing your thoughtsβI’ll definitely be adding this one to my reading list!
Sounds good! I like Gothic horror a lot too!
Sounds good!
Great review Kymber… π Almost makes me wanna read the book, but not sure I could. Horror for some reason gives me such willies I can’t stand them… lol
Always nice to hear when a debut novel comes out well. Thanks for the review, Kymber.
It sounds delightfully creepy, Kymber. Thanks for posting your review. And I love that image of the spooky house. Hugs.
I am not into horror stories, but it sounds very interesting. Thank you for your review.
Kymber, I am always up for a solid Gothic horror story. I think you hit it on the head that if you care for the characters, it doesn’t much matter how many similar haunted stories you’ve read before. It sounds very impressive. Thank you for sharing this review.π
Thank you, Bruce. I think that’s great that you like Gothic horror. I don’t think this one will let you down.π·πΊ
