We were on the roof, and we stood there gasping for air, both of us realizing this would be our last stand.
She was trembling, so I put my arm around her in hopes it would steady her.
I kept my gun drawn, and the fear in her eyes heightened my urge to protect her.
Why did they want her? She claimed not to know.
The door to the roof flung open, slamming the wall behind it, and the white-hot all-encompassing-light shown through.
Then on cue, as if someone had started a fog machine, thick clouds suspended near our feet rolled out, making it difficult to see when the beings finally made their appearance.
Give ussssss the girl, a voice in my head hissed, as one being moved closer, his four fingered hand outstretched.
The gun hadn’t scared these things, but I aimed it at the alien, regardless.
I sneaked a glance behind me. We were at the very edge of the roof now, and it was several stories to the ground below.
Then I noticed something strange when I peeked down at my girl. It was her left hand, which was resting near the lapel of my suit coat that gave it all away.
Dear God, my mind screamed in protest. Why hadn’t I noticed that before? This couldn’t be!
When my eyes searched hers, she could tell that I’d realized.
Ever so slightly, she shook her head while tears welled in her eyes.
“Noooooo,” she cried out.
Nooooooooo, the aliens joined in with their whisper-hissing until my head was painfully full.
I was too scared, and I didn’t know what I was doing…
Or did I?
As I flung her off the roof.

Now that’s a scary fall!!! Great story Kymber
Made me want to watch some UFO documentaries…
Loved it!
Wonderful graphic and scene!
This was an amazing read! Had me from the beginning!
A chilling story!
What a great story, Kymber, but what a conclusion! I didn’t see that coming! 🩷
Darn those aliens with telepathy. A good tale Kymber, but what happens after being flung off the roof? Have a great Tuesday. Allan
Brilliant story and a fantastic – yet unexpected – ending, Kymber. Love the featured image by Kevin, too. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx
Brilliant Kymber.
Wonderful story.. Such a twist, I didn’t expect that… 🌞
Love the shock ending! 😱 Excellent flash fiction piece. 👌
That was a very intense short story, but I’m dying to know more about her hand.
I love the noir vibe of this photo, but you took it in a wild and wonderful direction. Way to go!
Terrific story, Kymber.
oooh That ending! So good! I had to look back at the picture – yes – only four fingers! He did the only thing he could do, except the aliens were still up there with him! oh no!
wow…and didn’t see that coming. wonderfully weaved, Kymber ….so enjoyed. 🤍🌷
room for continuation… 😋
Always love the NTT responses and I loved the story, quite an ending 😀
Oh no, I didn’t expect that coming. Great story, Kymber.
I love it, Kymber! And I love the way you were able to work that little AI faux pas into the tale and make it a major point. Excellent work! 👏👏
I’m so relieved you liked it, Kevin. Like I said, NTT is my new favorite thing. 😀 I was hoping this was executed this way.
I knew there was an error in the pic, but I decided to post it anyhow, as I liked the overall vibe of it lol
Don’t worry about pleasing me. The fact that people are enjoying it and embracing their creativity is the real reward for me! 😊
I’m so glad you posted it anyway. The vibe was what interested me… I was thinking along some hard-boiled Noir vibes, but when I do that, it’s always hokey. hahaha (At least I can make The Mister laugh.) But then I saw her hand and suddenly the aliens came on board. LOL 😀
I think the noir idea would have been very cool too, but what you came up with was definitely a slam dunk!
Wow! Super tension!
Thank you, Jan. 🙂 I really appreciate your comment. Did you notice her left hand? I just wondered because I didn’t know if I executed this very well. lol 🙂 xo
Yikes!
LOL Thanks for stopping by, Jacqui.
