POV of Erin Rose
How things can change in two years! Mama and Tobin (he insists we no longer call him “Mr. Lindor”) are happily married and still living at Old Stone Farm. Mama says she would like to travel, but she could never imagine living anywhere but on the family farm. Personally, I felt like there were too many memories of daddy there, so as soon as my scholarship came through and I graduated from high school, I left for college.
I had planned to go to college in Ann Arbor where my step-brother Andy lived with his mom, but she had a job opportunity in another big city, so they ended up moving.
Andy’s mom was a supermodel. I’d seen pictures of her many times on the front pages of the grocery store magazines, but I didn’t have any idea that she was Andy’s mama! How cool is that?
They settled into what Andy called a “brownstone,” which looked like a mansion to me. But the houses were all attached to the ones next door. Andy called those, “rowhouses.”
After doing some research, I realized I would never have the funds to live in the little town they’d moved to. Tobin stepped in and said if I kept my grades where they should be and didn’t party, he’d rent an apartment or townhouse for me. I couldn’t believe it!
Mama wasn’t too sure about the deal Tobin and I had come to because I was a young girl moving to the big city. Tobin reassured her that the crime rate in the little town was low and Andy’s mama would look out for me.
When the big day came, I took my first flight ever and arrived in Goldenleaf two hours later without incident. I was excited but nervous about flying. Turns out, it’s lots of fun if you have a window seat like I did.
Isn’t Goldenleaf pretty? Everything is so lush and green, and there’s a chill in the air that thrills me to the point of giddiness.
Poor Andy must have thought I was nuts when he picked me up. Did I tell you about his car? I mean, holy cow! I don’t know what kind it is, but it looks slick and it’s bright red. I’m nineteen and I still don’t have my own car.
He tells me I don’t need one because everything I need is within walking distance, and what isn’t, well, there’s public transportation for that.
Andy and his mama live six blocks from me, so if there is anything I need, or if I don’t want to go into the creepy, dark basement to do my laundry, I can go to their place.
From the roof of my house, you can just barely see the roof of their house.
And here is where I live. Tobin fixed me up so nicely. I love it here.
A little tour, perhaps?
Here is the entryway and foyer.
Can you believe the beautiful floors? The lady I got the key from says they are original to the house with only minor repairs here and there.
I’ll be sure to send pictures of the floor and the molding and everything to Charlie because she’s interested in architecture.
When I went outside, I peeked around the other side of the patio. It looks like no one lives there.
Isn’t the house pretty and clean?
Even though life here is amazing, and I love school, I think of my sisters from time to time, wondering what they’re up to. My heart aches when I consider our sweet cow Mootilda.
But most of all, I miss Mama. My heart yearns to hear her raspy voice singing, “Bringing in the Sheaves1,” while she’s cleaning or baking.
Oh, and the smell of bread baking. There is nothing like it.
Did I mention the way people talk here? Sometimes, I forget to think before I say something and everyone around me looks at me like I grew another head!
Like the time recently, Andy introduced me to some of his friends, and they was talking about how busy they were with school and their private lives. That’s when I mentioned they thought they were busy, my mama’s double back-boned2, and she’s busy as a stump-tailed bull in fly season3.
As soon as I said it, my worst fears took over. The group just stared at me for a minute and you could have heard a pin drop. I could feel all the color leaving my face and my hands started shaking. Then came the laughter.
I was hard-pressed to think of a time when I’d been more embarrassed.
Later, Andy told me it was okay and that his friends liked me. I swore to him I would learn how to talk like them.
“But I don’t talk like them either,” he insisted. “I’m new here, too.”
What he didn’t seem to realize was that he was way closer to talking like them than I was.
It ended up, I spent a lot of time (especially mealtimes!) with Andy and his mama. She’s so sweet to me and insists I call her Donita.
I’m amazed at how much younger she looks than Mama. When I mentioned this to Donita, she busted out laughing. I asked her what was funny, and she said my mama probably hadn’t had all the surgeries she’d put herself through.
Donita said she’s had two facelifts, her nose and chin done, her eyes lifted, and all kinds of procedures I’ll have to look up because I don’t know what they are.
She says there is something to be said about growing old gracefully. I didn’t say it out loud, but comparing her life to Mama’s, I realize how hard my mama’s life has been. It made my heart ache, and I felt ashamed I’d never thought about that before.
Mama and I are on pretty good terms now, and I’m seeing her in a whole different way. Donita is really nice, and I can tell Andy is her whole life, but she hasn’t been near through the things my mama has had to endure.
This makes me proud of Mama and the strong woman she is. Don’t get me wrong, Donita is a strong woman, too, just in a different way.
I’ve found that I’m fond of the both of them, and I’m so glad they’re in my life.

Every story needs a supermodel. How much pressure does that put on the other characters? Have a good Sunday Kymber. Allan
LOL I agree with you, Allan. Although I think this is the first supermodel I’ve had in a story. 😀 It might cause some complications, that’s true.
I had a nice Sunday. I hope your week is finding you well.
Nice addition. I can see the supermodel in Donita.
Thank you, Jacqui. I think Donita has an air about her, it’s true. 😀
Tobin / Mr. Lindor is certainly a nice guy. That house looks fabulous. I am impressed by all the pictures. It seems a little bit complicated that Donita is Tobin’s ex. Well, it is an interesting story.
Thank you so much, Thomas. 🙂 Tobin really has a kind heart. Having Donita in the story could definitely create some complications. I can’t wait to explore the possibilities. And I’m glad you find the story interesting.
