Helen Buford was in the middle of a dilemma. She’d never married and felt too old now and had been hurt too much to pursue that ambition. But her sister, Viola, had convinced her to give love one more chance.
The crazy part was that Viola’s husband, Walter, had set her up with his brother, Jack St. Dennis.
She’d only briefly met Jack years ago at Viola and Walter’s wedding. He was Walter’s bestman. After that, Jack had returned to his position as a pilot in the military.
Tonight, she would meet him again and go on a Valentine’s Day date with him.
From the next room, she could hear Viola’s radio playing her favorite song, Toot Toot Tootsie (Goo’bye) by Billy Jones & Ernest Hare. She tapped her foot and fiddled with her hair again as the song played.
…Yesterday I heard a lover sigh
Goodbye, oh me oh my
Seven times he got aboard his train
And seven times he hurried back to kiss his love again and tell her
“Toot Toot Tootsie goodbye
Toot Toot Tootsie, don’t cry
That little choo-choo train that takes me
Away from you, no words can tell how sad it makes me
Kiss me Tootsie, and then, do it over again1…
Her sister peeked into her room at the St. Dennis winter mansion and told her that Jack had arrived and was waiting in the foyer downstairs.
All the way down, she feared she would trip in the impossible high-heeled shoes she had borrowed from Viola.
“Don’t fall, don’t fall,” she desperately whispered as she planted a foot on a tread, then the next, and the next.
Meanwhile, she couldn’t get the elated expression Vi had when she excitedly gushed, “Wouldn’t that be funny? And wonderful! As sisters, we’d be married to brothers!”
Helen wouldn’t have called that funny or wonderful. She’d just be lucky to get through this night in one piece.
As she stepped onto the marble floor in the foyer, Jack stood in the doorway, patiently waiting.
He was more handsome than she remembered. In fact, now that he was older, the lines on his face seemed to suit him. At the moment, he looked just as worried as she felt.
Her mouth went dry when she tried to swallow, and her heart beat hard against her ribs.
“Hello,” he said simply with a lovely baritone voice.
“Hello,” she murmured back, her voice tiny like a mouse. What she wouldn’t have given to have a glass of water. But then, she was shaking so hard, she would probably only spill it on herself.
At that moment, the muscles in his face relaxed a little, and he smiled.
She slowly let go, her own face relaxing. What a nice smile he had!
Maybe this Valentine’s date would be wonderful after all.
Author’s Note: Valentine’s Day in 1923 was a Wednesday, and the silent film Helen and Jack saw that night was called, Down to the Sea in Ships2.
Blooper!
This is what Helen put on when I told her to change into her evening wear. It’s not exactly pleasing to my 1920s aesthetic. lol

Happy Valentine’s Day!
Hello, again Friends! I wanted to explain that these little forays into the St. Dennis family and the Willoughbys are more about my gameplay than writing an actual story. That is why these entries are so short. I use what happens in my game, and imagine what they might be saying. Sometimes I post funny things that happen, other times, it’s like this entry. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed playing and writing it.
Thank you to Bee (Stories by Bee / Poses by Bee) who edited this little story.
And thank you, kind readers, for liking, lurking, reading, and commenting. You are important!

Hope all is well and until we meet again….
May your day be touched
by a bit of Irish luck,
Brightened by a song
in your heart,
And warmed by the smiles
of people you love.
(Irish Saying)

You never know what’s around the corner!
Thank you, Jan. That is so true! 🙂
Is it ok that I like the blooper the most? Made me laugh out loud!
Happy Valentine’s Day to you and the Mister!
LMAO!! That’s so funny, and it made me laugh. Turns out, Helen is a dork through and through. She thought I said “80s” when I really said “20s.” But honestly, I don’t know anyone in the 80s that even dressed like that. hahaha
Thank you. Happy Valentine’s Day to you and your Mister. 😀
not lurking today…😁
it’s a lovely one, Kymber….so enjoyed 🤍
Well, hello! So good to see you. 😀 ❤️

What a romantic story!
Thank you, CT. ❤️❌⭕ Happy Valentine’s Day!
That outfit looked like she was ready for a date at an 80s techno club lol
Very charming story. Love it. Happy Valentine’s Day! 😊
IKR? LOLOLOL I was like, “C’mon now, we can do a little better than that!” haha
Thank you so much, Kevin. Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours.
If you do a story about a rave, you already have one image ready to go. Look at the bright side. 😄
Hahaha! That’s a great point! Maybe I’ll add that to my list. 😂🤣
Never throw away that which can be recycled. I have a ton of unused images and they’ve come in quite handy. lol
Just think – Your next story: Love at the Rave, Ecstasy in more ways than one. 😜
Now that is solid advice right there. 😀 You should see some of the pictures I’ve kept. LOLOL
LMAO!! Love at the Rave! Now that is a story that could write itself, I think! 😂🤣
And the worst part is, the truth would be far stranger than the fiction. lol
I know that’s right! LOL 😂🤣
Oh, Kymber, you are a hopeless romantic. This is delightful.
LOLOL Thank you so much. You are definitely right about the hopeless romantic part. 😂❤️❌⭕
💚
🤍🌷
You hit another one out of the park. How many times have I found myself in the same situation. First dates do get to you and make you nervous. Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours.
Wow, thank you so much, JC! Those first dates can be rough. Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours as well.
You’ve captured the emotion of the situation beautifully! Love the illustrations as well. 🙂
