Original Post:

Happy timezones, my friends! I come to you today to let you know I’ve been attempting to figure out why some comments post as “Anonymous” instead of your name and avatar.

I’m not sure if this is some kind of bug in WordPress, or what. I’ve read a lot of posts and articles about this, but I’m still not sure what is happening.

I took some screenshots even though I don’t know if they will help or not. But, I’m trying.

This is what the comment form looks like if you are not logged in:

If the form looks like the one above, you need to fill out the information (name, email, and your website).➺Your email will remain private. Please let me know if this doesn’t work for you and you still show up as anonymous.

This is what the form looks like if you are logged in:

In the case above, you are logged in and should be able to comment under your logged in name.

Of course, it’s fine with me if you do comment anonymously, I am just trying to see if any of this helps.

Please let me know how this is working for you. I’m very interested in solving this problem.

P.S. I found this in my notifications on Sunday, and I want to thank you, Gentle Readers. You are all amazing, and I appreciate you.

Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for reading, liking, lurking, and commenting. I appreciate you.

26 Comments on “Anonymous Comments

  1. I’m not sure if this has anything to do with it but the last time I went to comment on your blog I tried in WP Reader because it’s easier for me, but there was no comment box. In fact, there was no way to read any of the comments on any of your posts either, even though I could still do so from the front end. I wasn’t sure if you’d opted for that yourself or if it was more WP shenanigans.

Anyway, when I went to comment from the front end, there was no option to log in with my WP account, which is why I commented as “Carmilla”. As a matter of fact, there still isn’t, but only in Firefox. In Chrome I see a WP button when I start to type in the comment box which I assume would let me log in if I clicked it, but in Firefox I only see the fields asking for my name, email, and website. Downside of that: no profile pic! Kind of like on tumblr it wouldn’t have mattered what I put as my name, if you saw my profile pic you’d know it was me. :p

So I suppose if someone didn’t type in their info like I did they would be posting as Anonymous, but I didn’t try it so I can’t be certain. Anyway, needless to say, things are back to normal for your blog in Reader now. I can click on the comment button to read the comments, and there is a comment box I can use while logged in as courtleymanor. Can’t think why the site is suddenly behaving this way in Firefox though, because it worked fine before.

  2. I’ve noticed this issue for a while. WordPress performed major updates which could be part of the problem. Also, it could be a browser problem. I keep three browsers open at all times and when problems occur, I check another browser to see if the same issue occurs.

  3. I don’t have to login again at your site, but I do at others. WP has been bonkers lately. I hate to subscribe to my own blog just to reply to comments.

  4. Good morning, Kymber. about the anonymous comments. Your posting is different than most as it is announced on the notifications panel and when that is selected the post slides out and to the side of the panel. The comments field appears at the very bottom and does not list my avatar beneath.

  5. Hi Kymber. I’ve had nothing but problem for over a month now commenting on many blogs. Even when it says I’m logged in, the comment bounces back as ‘not logged in’. WP has yet to solve this. As for your blog. Right now it tells me I’m logged in here. I hope this goes through. Hugs <3

  6. I’m logged into WordPress, but I still had to add my name and email address to make this comment. Maybe this is a thing that WordPress does if you don’t have a x.wordpress.com website?

  7. Thank you for trying to look into this. I hope it doesn’t cause too much stress.

It has affected me off and on. I will be logged in (always comment from my computer) and it shows me as such, and then once the comment posts it says anonymous on my comment. It’s been the case on a few different WordPress sites… both self-hosted and WordPress-hosted. It does seem better since I switched from using Opera to Firefox, which has me wondering if it’s a browser issue rather than a WordPress issue.

    1. I’m so glad you’re posting this because I didn’t even think about it being browser issue. I reckon it very well could be. It is interesting that it’s happening on both wp.com and wp.org. That’s good to know, too.

Thank you so much for updating me on this, I really appreciate it. 🙂

  8. I get those now and then too, Kymber. I figured it was someone commenting from their phone where they may not be logged into WP. I don’t mind them except that I have no idea who’s leaving the comment and can’t return the visit.

WP sure is glitchy sometimes! But I still like it. I just wish they’d stop trying to improve it! Lol

    1. Ooooh, I hadn’t thought about the fact the person might be commenting from their phone. You’re very smart, Diana. 😀

I don’t mind them either, but I’ve had different commenters ask me why they are showing up as Anonymous, or telling me they don’t know why they’re showing up that way.

So, I thought I’d look into it and address it here. But I really haven’t learned much about it other than it could be a WP bug.

I love WP, too. I love having access to recent posts in the Reader as well. And yes, maybe they should stop “improving” it. haha

  9. Honey ChickieDee, I have been noticing the same issues and it seems like there are all sorts of technological snafus that’s been happening in the previous months on WP. Even my Avatar is missing on my posts too. 😡 This is sooooo insane and the issues vary among users and it can be so incredibly frustrating. So girlfriend, I understand. I have never seen so many issues with this site before, but you are not alone. I pray we don’t go into the new year with these issues not solved! 😝 Hang in there girlfriend and lets hope these problems are resolved soon! Hugs and smooches! 🤗🥂😘

    1. Yes! That’s for sure. I wonder what happened to your avatar, chickienoodle? That is really frustrating. I haven’t ever been plagued by such things with WP before, either. This is just nuts. I hope the same thing with the New Year. They need to figure this stuff out. Hugs and smooches to you, too! xoxo 🤍🎅🎄⛄🔔

Have I ever mentioned that the Mister is in my phone contacts as “Smoochie Poochie?” LMAO 😀 So, when he and I were just dating, my sister and I were waiting for him to join us at a restaurant. Well, my sister, being the joker she is, got hold of my phone. The Mister was texting me, and she started answering as if she was me. She called him Smoochie Pooochie. LOL

But the Mister is pretty smart, and he texted back, “Hi, Kari!” LOLOLOL So, even though Kari was the first one to call him that, I thought it was so funny, and put him in my contacts as that. 😀

  10. I think WP has lost its mind about comments. I am logged in and still have the ‘not logged in’ requirements. I guess I’ll click ‘save’.

    1. Yes! I agree, Jacqui! I’m glad it’s them and not me. LOLOL I can’t understand why it wouldn’t just stay logged in across all WP sites. Crazy crazy. Thanks for letting me know.

  11. Its strange but se eral times this year wordpress has done some strange things, figured it was the WordPress website but aparently it is just a bug with the software this time perhaps.

    1. Thank you. It’s so hard because when I think one thing has been fixed, a few more turn sideways. LOL Hopefully, this will be fixed in the near future.

I’ve also noticed people aren’t able to make comments on my posts through the WP Reader, when just a few days ago, they could. I didn’t change anything that I can think of, so I don’t know what’s up with that.

  12. Not sure. I don’t think I have ever seen this. Most of the sites I comment on seem to be already linked in to my user name and blog spot and give the pop up, you are commenting as….offering the option to change that. Is there another comment widget you can select for your site that might do the same? Cheers. Allan

    1. I’m glad you haven’t had this problem, Allan. I’m always logged in, too, but I’ve seen some of my regular commenters coming across as Anonymous when they don’t mean for it to. That’s a good question about using a different comment widget. I will definitely look into that. Thank you for the suggestion.
