The Hidden Talents of an Incredible Woman!

Hello there, Friends! The incredible woman I’m talking about is my mother.

I was lucky enough to have the best kind of mother anyone could ever ask for. Throughout my life, and still, she is my trusted confidante, the one I turn to when times are good and when they’re tough.

“Nana” with Lilly and Lyra

Earlier this year, she became suddenly ill and we almost lost her. In fact, her surgeon said her recovery was a miracle. Our family gave extra thanks this holiday season that she is still with us and going strong.

Although she has many talents, I’m only focusing on one because not many people who know her, realize she can do this. You see, she’s unassuming and quiet, never one to toot her own horn or to get showy about things.

There we were, going through old boxes, looking at the baby book my grandmother made, complete with clips of Mom’s toddler hair, growing measurements, milestones, and the like. We found old love letters my father sent to her when he was in college. Mom gave me one of the invitations to her and Dad’s wedding in 1965 and we looked at pictures my children and my sisters’ children made for her over the years.

Mom and Dad got married 57 years ago, in 1965

That’s when it happened… I pulled out several laminated sheets of animal characters complete with nursery rhymes. To my surprise, Mom said she was the artist, and that she’d used an old coloring book for reference. I was gobsmacked because I didn’t know she could draw.

I took some pictures of her drawings so I could show you all. (This post will undoubtedly embarrass her, but I hope she knows how loved and appreciated she is.)

Please excuse the poor quality and glares as I am not known for taking good pictures.

All of the drawings are freehand with pencil and ink:

I hope you enjoyed this post. Thank you for reading, liking, lurking and commenting.

I love you, Momma. xoxo

  1. ❤God willing, may God bless her and you. She is truly beautiful. My greetings to her and to you, my dear Suhair. You know, I am my big sister. Her name is Suhair. I loved you and your stories, my love.

  2. A great tribute to your Mom. Having loving parents as role models and mentors is a great joy. Hope she is still doing well. Amazing freehand drawings. A real talent. Happy Tuesday. Allan

    1. Thank you, Allan. 🙂 Mom is doing great, thank you! 🙂 We just went on a short road trip with her and Dad to Indiana to see my dad’s brother. It was so nice and I think they had fun. I hope you’re having a happy week. 🙂

  3. I know from experience that when you find out about an outstanding quality about your mother that you was not aware of beforehand it just makes you even more proud of her.

  4. Sounds like you have a mum like mine – bloody awesome! It’s hard to admit I came close to losing mine too earlier this year after a heart attack, the type that more often than not proves fatal. I’m so glad your mum got through her surgery and is still with you.

It’s lovely there are various pictures and such from her earlier life you can look at and share in those experiences. But what a surprise to find such a hidden talent – how could she not have mentioned this before?! Those drawings are just amazing! 💜 Was cartooning a hobby for her at some point? She has real talent, as you know. I’m hoping she can see the comments here (without too much embarrassment 😆) and realise how good she actually is! Not just a skilled mother to have raised such a wonderful daughter, but an artiste to boot!

    1. Thank you so much, Caz. ❤️ I think your mum sounds absolutely amazing! I’m so glad your mum got through that difficult time, and she is still with you.

Isn’t that funny that I never knew this talent existed? I didn’t know drawing was a hobby for her. I remember her doing loads of crossword puzzles and Sudoku puzzles, but don’t remember her drawing.

I made her look at the comments, and she was so embarrassed but quite happy about the post and peoples’ reactions to her secret ability. lol

  6. I didn’t know she could do that either but I am so not surprised. Wonderfully done Sharon and many thanks Kimberly for the post!

  7. Wow! and, those are old poems. I’m probably your mothers age and you just don’t hear those poems anymore. Most kids don’t even know about them. It’s funny and I love that you cherish this about your mother. I remember drawing as I told stories to my girls when they were little. I wonder if they remember? Thanks for the beautiful memories.

  8. Wow, Kymber! Your mom should make a kiddie coloring book from her prints. She’s talented! I’m so glad she overcame her illness to be with you hopefully for many more years.

    1. Thank you, Harmony. Sending hugs back to you. 💕 If only you knew her, you’d be amazed at how she never draws attention to herself even though she definitely could. 🙂 💕

  9. Hi Kymber. What a beautiful post and tribute to your mom. She is a real talent and may have missed her calling as a wonderful illustrator. <3

    1. Thank you so much. ❤ Oh my goodness, I am looking forward to when she sees your comment. I’m sure her cheeks will turn red, but she’ll appreciate the kind words. 🙂
