Chapter 9.22: Dear Diary, Into the Future

Dear Diary, as you can see, I haven’t written in a long while. After Gil was born, life really changed, and it was for the better. Amy loved having a little brother, which was a relief because I’ve always been concerned if something upset her, she might lose control of her powers. Who knows what would happen then?

I needn’t have worried, though, because she had such a calm demeanor and so far, doesn’t remember anything about her life before.

Amy seems to be a normal teen who hates homework but does it anyway because she knows Sebastian will check it over when he gets home from work.

Gil is a sweet boy, but if you tell him I said that, he’ll deny it with all the enthusiasm he can muster.

And he can muster a lot.

Sebastian is the only police officer in the Veiled Islands. He loves his job although there isn’t much of a crime rate here. He mostly deals with minor disputes between neighbors.

Since turning human, he’s noticed his eyesight changing and needs glasses now.

From the kitchen where I’m making dinner, I can hear the kids watching their favorite movie. It’s evening, so Gerrard always makes an appearance about this time.

“Children,” I heard him say, “it is time for our evening constitutional.”

“Why don’t you just call it a walk like most people?” Gil asked.

“Because he’s weird,” Amy said.

The thing about Gerrard is that he acts like he can’t stand the kids, and they, in turn, act as if they despise him, too. But it’s all a strange game they play.

“I am not weird,” he said with indigency in his voice, “you are weird. Look how you’re sitting.”

“I like watching it upside down,” Gil said.

“Shh… do you know how long we’ve waited for this movie to finally stream?” Amy asked.

“What is this movie, anyway?”

“It’s the Emperor Of Insanity,” Amy said.

“Turn it off and let’s go.”

“Fine,” Amy grumbled, grabbing the remote and turning the movie off.

That was my cue to make an appearance.

“Dinner is almost ready, so don’t be long.”

“I don’t even want the repugnant little demons to join me,” Gerrard said.

“Well, that’s good because we don’t even want to go,” Amy shot back at him.

“Have a nice time,” I called out after them as they slipped through the greenhouse door, walking toward the beach.

Life here had been pleasant, with a routine I could count on for the first time in my life. I had friends who didn’t know my past or about Amy’s powers. People probably figured Sebastian wasn’t really Amy’s father, but they didn’t know I was really her aunt.

It was a secret I intended to keep until the day I died. There was nothing I wouldn’t do to keep our lives simple and peaceful.

From the Diary of Amy Noble

Dear Diary, this is my first official entry in the diary Mom gave me. She’s already explained the whole family journal thing where someone from each generation writes about their life and then passes it on to their child.

To be honest, I think the journal should go to my little brother Gil. He’s still too young to take this seriously, but there is nothing about myself I feel should be documented. I mean, nothing has ever happened to me. Life is just… dull and the same.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my life. I have lots of friends and a couple who are closer than the others. My family is great, even if my grandfather is totally off his rocker. I’ve learned to just play along.

P.S. Maybe Grandfather should write the family diary. I know this is going to sound absolutely crazy, but I think he thinks he’s a vampire or something. He only comes over in the evenings and stays pretty late, long after Gil and I go to bed. And there are other reasons I think this, too, but more on that at another time.

So, I’m supposed to write about my boring, everyday kind of life. Mom insisted it has to be me. In fact, she said I’m the only one eligible to be the heir. When I asked her why it couldn’t be Gil, she didn’t give me a reason I can accept, and then she changed the subject.

Another strange thing was when I asked her if I could read the family journal to get an idea of what others have written about, she flat out refused. She told me some nonsense about how she couldn’t give me the old journal when she’s not done writing in it, but I sensed her response was a final thing and that I’ll never be allowed to read it. Of course, that makes me want to read it all the more.

So what should I write about?

Oh!

Maybe I could write about my very best friend in the entire world, Dolly. She is a cocker spaniel, and she definitely has adventures I don’t even know about, I’m certain. And she is the best and goodest girl ever.

I think tomorrow I will write about my friends from school. There’s got to be something there that’s worth telling you about.

Grandfather came over like usual for what he calls our “evening constitutional.” He’s so strange, but there is something about him I really like. I mean, I like him because he’s my grandfather, but he’s so extra about everything.

I think he must use the best face creams ever… or maybe he’s had some facelifts because he never seems to age. It’s all part of him thinking he’s a vampire.

“Are you still having nightmares?” he asked me as we stood near the water.

The salt rolling off the sea smelled so good. I took deep breaths, admiring the calm nature all around me.

“Yes, but I don’t remember much about them.”

“What do you remember?”

The concern on his face was a familiar sight when we talked about my nightmares. No matter what I thought about him, he was a caring grandfather.

Clenching my eyes shut, I tried to clear my mind and think only about that dreadful moment when I woke up. A scream caught in my throat, and little beads of sweat moistened my forehead.

“I heard someone say, ‘She’s just like her mother.’ The woman who said it was scared, I think.”

Watching my brother wandering back to the house, I whispered, “What does it mean?”

Grandfather put his hand on my shoulder and looked into my eyes. He did that a lot throughout my childhood, and even though it’s kind of weird, it always calmed me down instantly.

The horrible feeling clawing away at my gut went away, and all the muscles in my body felt more relaxed.

“Say hello to your horses, then come in for dinner.”

He walked to my brother, and they both went back inside.

When we first moved here, the first thing Grandfather did was bring my horses home. I loved them both more than I can say.

This is Duchess, and she’s an Appaloosa.

This is Duke and he is a Palomino.

While I bedded the horses down, all thoughts of nightmares left me as if they’d never existed.

Well, this is my first entry. My only fear now is letting you down, Diary, from boredom.

When I got back inside, the family was already waiting at the table to eat. All throughout dinner, mom kept looking at Grandfather, meeting his gaze. It seemed almost like they had something to talk about, but it was a private matter.

I don’t know why, but those looks they kept passing back and forth put me on edge. Glancing at my brother, it was obvious he hadn’t noticed anything unusual. Then, Mom realized I was watching. She sat up straighter in her chair and made a point of not looking at Grandfather at all after that.

Dad finally pushed his chair back from the table and told me he was ready to look at my homework. Had he noticed the strange looks? I wasn’t sure.

But I was going to be on my toes from now on to try to find out what was going on.

  1. Dolly is such an adorable dog! I love how Amy thinks Dolly wanders on secret adventures around the islands, like a spy dog or a pirate puppy, haha.

I think Sophie’s decision to forbid Amy from reading the diaries could turn out quite badly. There’s a lot of traumatic and disturbing content in the diaries for a sheltered young teen to read, as well as learning about the truth of herself and the family, so I understand the reasoning, but I think Sophie finding out herself without any guidance or support is worse…

  2. Amy and Gerard have such a funny relationship. But it’s nice. Since her other grandparents aren’t around, at least he can fill in that void.

    1. Thank you, Violincat. I think it’s nice that he has stepped in as a grandparent, too. Hopefully, there isn’t any devious reason for him to do so.

  3. I just have this feeling that the peace isn’t going to last! Lol. Of course not. And Amy sounds like such a teen. She knows that something isn’t exactly lining up. Great episode, Kymber. 😀

  4. Why do I get the feeling Amy’s ‘grandfather’ wants Sophie to tell her the truth about Gigi? That’ll be a fun conversation. Or not-so-fun. 🙁 Loved this chapter! Still sad to see the legacy’s end on the horizon though. But we can always return to them as much as we’d like to 😀

    1. Oooooh, you might be right about that! 😀 I’m so glad you loved the chapter. I can’t believe ND is almost finished. It’s so bittersweet to me.

  5. OHH so lovely .. start with a sweet AMY add in a handsome Seb looking all debonair in his specs .. the interplay between Gerrard and the children (LOL) then add in puppies and horses .. all is too idyllic to last … UNLESS you are going to give s a sweet serene gen 10 end .. hhhmmm nahh I don’t think so!

  6. Thank you for sharing another exciting story!!… everyone is different and even though the torch has been passed to Amy, there is a possibility that she may carry it in a different manner that those from the past as she follows her adventures and dreams… 🙂

    Until we meet again..
    May your day be touched
by a bit of Irish luck,
    Brightened by a song
    in your heart,
    And warmed by the smiles
    of people you love.
    (Irish Saying)

  7. YAY! AMY.GOT.HER.HORSES!

And ohmygosh is Amy stunning. I love her curly locks.
I LOL’d at Amy thinking “Grandfather” is a vampire, complete with (most likely) facelifts lololol. I like that she has more evidence to support her theory. Amy, IF YOU ONLY KNEW. Or maybe… WHEN you find out!

I’m excited to see what life has instore for Amy, even if she thinks her life is anything other than ordinary, we all know differently.

I like how the diary/torch was passed to Amy, but not before getting one (maybe last) entry from Sophie. <3
Thanks for another fun read, Kymber 😀

    1. Amy got her horses! Finally! LOL

I love her curly hair, too. 😀

I love what you said about Amy and her “vampire” grandfather. haha So funny!

Amy really feels she has nothing to write about, but you know that won’t be true. haha I’m merciless to my poor characters.

I’m so glad you liked it.

  8. I think they might be best to sit Amy down and explain everything to her. Otherwise, she’s liable to revolt when she does find out what they’ve been hiding.

    1. I think you’re right about sitting Amy down and explaining things to her in an upfront way. Rebelling is what teens do best, and they are just giving her a reason to do that if she finds everything out on her own.

  9. Ooh, I see you turned Gerard back to human. Is it because Amy can’t see his real appearance with glowing eyes and all? I think it had been mentioned before that not everyone can see that.
It’s funny she figured out he’s a vampire. She has no idea, LOL
I wonder how Sophie’s going to go about this. Amy sure has the right to her family heritage and to get to know her bio mother at least through her journal if she can’t do so in any other way. I think Amy’s curiosity may cause her to read the journals anyway, no matter what Sophie says. And it may be even more dangerous if she’ll know but won’t tell them that she knows. If Sophie tells her, she’ll have some sense of control because she will be able to talk to her about it and explain. Otherwise, can’t expect Amy won’t be curious after telling her about the family journals and forbidding her from reading them. She will be snooping, I’m sure.
By the wonder, I wonder how much Sophie’s obliviousness has to do with Gerard…

    1. I turned him back to human because he kept catching on fire when I had him outside. LOL I’m not ready for him to die yet! haha Anyway, my reasoning is that Amy can’t see the glowing eyes.

She has no idea how right she is about him! LOL

I totally agree with what you said about Amy having the right to know her heritage, and you are definitely right that if Sophie just tells her everything, she’ll have more control because Amy will know she can talk to her about these tough issues.

You might be on to something! More on that in the near future! 😀

      1. I just did a quick look around the net and apparently the Immune to Heat lifetime award that comes with Seasons works on vampires as well. Maybe you could try that for Gerrard? There is of course the vampire specific Immortal reward but that one comes with annoying sparkles.

        1. Oh, thank you so much! I’m so thankful you found that out. I will definitely try that on Gerrard. I’m avoiding sparkles at all cost. hahaha 😀

  10. Books which are forbidden call out being read. And a secret diary from your own family is even calling louder.
Curiosity kills the cat. 😉 Amy is grown into a very pretty girl. Gil is a nice boy too.
I’m looking forward to read what the future holds for them all.

    1. You are so right about books that are forbidden. I think it’s human nature to want the things you cannot have. I imagine Amy will want to know what is going on and why it’s all so secret? I can’t wait for the future to unfold and I’m so glad you liked the chapter.

  11. It could be debated, that what Sophie is doing out of fear for her family, will do more harm in the end. But then again, that fear is justified for sure. Especially with kids under developed frontal lobes. I love Seb as an officer! I hope he has the patience to deal with all those small squabbles.

    1. I completely agree with your wise statement regarding Sophie and what she’s doing out of fear. She thinks she’s protecting Amy, but this could so easily blow up in her face and hurt Amy in the end. I think Seb is so happy to have some semblance of normalcy, so he’ll be patient with the little squabbles. 😀

  12. Ohhh. So Amy doesn’t remember anything that happened and what she did to save everyone from Tilly. Interesting. I still think Gerard might be hanging around more to watch over her and to determine what she knows and what she doesn’t so he’ll be able to control her and perhaps even harness whatever powers she may have. I wonder if Sophie knows about their little talks and Amy’s nightmares or that is something that only Gerard is privy to. Hmmmm.

    1. Oh yes, Amy is gorgeous and Gil is gonna look like Sebastian I think. Hmmm. And poor Sophie is trying so hard to keep things normal for Amy, but she’ll eventually figure it out. Ready to hear how this all plays out for the last generation. 😁

      1. I thought Gil might look like Sebastian, too! 😀 Sophie is definitely thinking she is protecting Amy, but we all know that secrets usually hurt the person in the end. Hopefully, she’ll realize she needs to talk to Amy about it all before it is too late.

    2. Yeah, Amy really doesn’t seem to remember. But there might be a reason for that. I think you’re right and that they shouldn’t be completely comfortable around Gerrard. That’s a good question! More on that in the near future!
