It’s Okay to be Different

48

The girl skipped and twirled
Not caring who may see
She was different yet the same
Inside like you and me

She listened to her special music
That others could not hear
They watched her as she danced
Around and thought it very weird

The mother knew inside the girl
Were many gifts untold
If only they all could see
Her heart was pure as gold

It’s not bad to be different
The mother said to the girl
She appreciated this daughter
Who was better than all the world

  1. The first verse is my favorite, but notice when I read this next time it can be some other verse. This is a work of the poet who can write and reflect different things on different days. Poems are not a one time thing, they live…

  2. Lovely poem – I’ve just worked on Rain man in class, and my thoughts went to a colleague who has an autistic son. My heart went out to them, reading your poem. <3

  3. If only there are not only parents who support, cares and respect difference of their children, the world will be a better . place. Sadly, a lot of parents as well reject their children because they are lgbt. So why some difference as handicap is better accepted than lgbt in family today? Difference is awesome no matter who we are, we are born this way.

  4. I immediately thought of my grandson on the autism spectrum. He knows he’s different, and we help him be proud of himself and his own talents. He dances every day (spins and twirls like a ballet dancer, eyes closed, sweet smile of pure joy!), and your poem was so like him!! I really love it, Kymber. ♥
