Chapter 4.20: Dear Diary, Family Life and Fundraisers

1

Dear Diary, no matter how I try to hang on to time, it slides by anyway. Days turn into weeks, children get bigger and I more times than not, step on every Lego missed during clean up.

Look at these two goofballs. Those faces get them out of so much trouble! Well, when I’m in charge anyway. Susan and Xalen aren’t such pushovers.

2

The twins still have matching mannerisms and it still freaks me out as they move in unison. It makes me wonder what it’s like to have a twin. Are they all as in time with each other as this pair?

While their movements are often in time with each other, they couldn’t look more different from one another. Holden’s skin is like porcelain, his features fine, his cheeks plump and rosy.

3

Rosetta, on the other hand, is slightly darker in skin tone and she has all that rich, brown hair that shines with red in the sun. The deeper colors bring out the blue in her eyes.

I’m sure both of these children are going to be heartbreakers some day.

They’re starting to speak more, putting words into sentences. It’s fun to finally hear what they are thinking. Xalen and I don’t use baby talk with them, so they speak quite clearly for such little kids.

One funny thing about them is that they seem to have their own language they use when addressing one another. It’s just one more of those freaky things they share.

4

“Whew! When was the last time anyone cleaned this fridge out?” Susan exclaimed from the kitchen. “Yuck!”

I’ll readily admit I’m not the housekeeping type. Susan has “domestic engineer” stamped on her forehead but I just can’t be bothered. (Much to her dismay.)

Don’t get me wrong, even though she excels at it, Susan’s ambition is not to be a housewife with children running all over. Before she joined me here in Alpine County, she was a freelance photographer. After the heartache of what she went through with her previous boyfriend Victor, she hadn’t accepted any assignments.

“Tea?” I asked, already knowing the answer as I filled the kettle with water and put it on the burner.

5

Susan put the twins down for their nap and was back just in time to join me at the breakfast counter with some Earl Gray. Drinking tea reminded us both of breezy mornings in Winchester, sitting at the table with momma and our two other sisters. Daddy and the boys took their tea earlier and by the time we sat down with ours, they were already working in the fields.

“Do you ever get homesick?” Susan asked as if reading my mind.

I shrugged a little, pretending I wasn’t longing for home in the least. It was easier for me to dismiss how I felt about it than to get all wistful like Susan often did. More times than not, I wouldn’t allow myself to walk down memory lane… I didn’t like how that yearning for homemade bread, loud mornings and down to earth chores tugged at my heart.

“Sometimes I wish I could go back. Life was so much simpler.”

“Was it, though?” I asked, stirring my tea. “I mean seems like the problems are all the same it’s just the scenery has changed.”

She seemed lost in thought for a little bit as she sipped the steaming liquid from her cup.

6

Was this a door opening?

Hesitantly, I ventured out. “Listen, Sis, I want to talk to you – I’ve wanted to for a while now, but I didn’t want to upset you.”

Her eyes grew huge and she put a hand over her heart. “Do you want me to move out? I know we haven’t really talked about how long I was going to stay. I – I’ve tried to be a help to you but I understand if I’ve overstayed my welcome.”

“What? No! When I said you could stay here, I didn’t have any type of conditions for that in mind. You can stay as long as you want. In fact, you have no idea how lonely I was before you got here. I was literally wallowing in self-pity because I was stuck here alone in a job I hated.”

“Oh,” she said softly. I had a feeling then, she knew what direction I was headed.

“I don’t know how to say this without upsetting you and that’s the last thing I want to do.”

“Don’t start on me, Marty. I’ve seen you and Xalen watching my every move.”

So, she did know. I tried to take her hand but she pulled away before I could. “I think we should be able to talk about this.”

7

“You’re just like everyone else, judging me. Why can’t you all just leave me alone?”

Tears filled my eyes and I bit my lower lip. “Because we love you.”

I was certain our conversation had ended before it began. Instead, Susan blurted out everything she was feeling in one big gasp. “Apparently, Victor didn’t love me. I thought he was the one. And before him, I thought Theo was the one. Why doesn’t anyone want me? I try so hard to be perfect! I try so hard to be what people want!”

Wiping stray tears away, I said, “I just want you to be you! If you have to bend and change for anyone, they aren’t worth being with! You are important, Susan! You’re worth so much more than you realize! You’re worth more than a hundred Victors or Theos put together!”

How did we get to this point? What happened in her life that made her feel so inferior and unwanted?

9

When she didn’t respond, I turned my face away, trying to dry the tears that kept falling. How badly I wished I could wave a magic wand and make everything right for my baby sister.

“Do you know why Theo broke off your engagement?”

“He never told me why. He loved me one minute and then the next… ” her words caught in her throat before trailing off altogether.

“At Grandpa’s Christmas party, he told me he’s gay. It wasn’t right for him not to tell you that but that is the reason.”

“What?” she gasped.

“He couldn’t admit it to himself. He thought getting married and having kids was expected of him but in the end, he couldn’t do it.”

10

“Really?”

Nodding, I continued, “Momma told me that Victor had a brother with an eating disorder. She was under the impression he cared enough about you to let your family know what you were struggling with. At the same time, what he went through already was so taxing on him, he couldn’t go through it again.”

Susan sobbed and wiped her eyes with a napkin. “I thought he brought me to Winchester to propose to me. It hurt so bad, Marty. I feel so betrayed by him.”

“I know you do,” I said softly, in the tenderest voice I could manage. After a moment, I dared to ask, “Do you have an eating disorder?”

11

She paused for so long, I didn’t think would answer me. I stared at my tea wondering if I should have said something different. What if this was the only opening I would ever have and I blew it?

Out of the corner of my eye, I watched as she took a sip of her tea, then placed the cup back in the saucer with a small clink.

“It’s cold,” she murmured.

“Sus-”

“-Don’t say anything else.” With shaky hands, she pushed her cup away. “I know I have a problem with food. I can’t ignore it anymore. But I don’t know what to do either. All I know is, I don’t want to feel this way anymore.”

12

Her admission took me completely by surprise but it was the moment I was hoping for.

“I found a clinic that specializes in eating disorders and it’s right in the city, not too far. We could call and make an appointment.”

Frowning, she said, “I don’t know.”

“I will be with you every step of the way, whatever that is.”

After a moment, she nodded and I reached for the phone.

divider 1

Once again, time got the better of me. Susan was able to be treated by a doctor at the clinic on an outpatient basis. Through the clinic, she also received counseling and monitoring by a nutritionist.

Susan was by no means “cured” but she was learning how to cope with her problems and change her habits. It was hard work and I was proud of her.

13

I was still intent on reaching my goal of physical perfection and had taken up a class called “Mommy and Me Yoga.” At first, the twins just ran around climbing on things they shouldn’t which rendered it pointless. When Susan decided to join me, the kids magically behaved themselves and actually got into the class.

We enjoyed practicing at home, too. I was more flexible than Susan because I’d always exercised, but she was catching up quickly.

“Hey! How come your sister is helping your mommy and you’re making it harder for me?” Susan laughed when Holden climbed onto her back and sat on her feet.

He threw his hands in the air and squealed, “I fly! I fly!” Then he made airplane sounds.

14

I tried to regain my concentration and not laugh. It was hard.

“That’s right, Rosetta, hold me up!” I brightly cheered.

15

“I strong!” she yelled to her brother.

16

“I fly!” he triumphantly shouted back.

17

“All right, Monsters!” I said, standing up and pulling Holden off of Susan so she could stand, too. “It’s almost time for lunch!”

“Yay!” they squealed in unison.

As the kids chattered amongst themselves in that made up language only they knew, I turned my attention to my sister.

18

“What?” she asked.

“I’m sorry, it’s hard not to stare. You look so healthy.”

She blushed prettily and tried to make little of it. “It’s no big deal.”

“Are you kidding? I’m so proud of you, I could burst! This is a huge deal!” Smiling, I could see she was embarrassed so I tried to tone down my enthusiasm. “I’ve seen what a struggle this has been and I just wanted you to know how proud I am of you.”

19

“Okay, okay,” she laughed. “Can we stop talking about it now? Please?”

I laughed, too. “Okay, but I have a favor to ask.” Her right eyebrow went up and I took that as a sign to continue. “The Neptune Foundation is having a fundraiser night where all of our patrons will come to see as Xalen dedicates a statue to the Sprague Collection.”

“Oh, when is this? You need me to babysit?”

I shook my head. “No, no. I want you to go with me. I want you to see the collection and what I do. Besides, Xalen will be busy schmoozing all night and I need someone to hang out with.”

“I’ll get to see the mansion!” she exclaimed.

“Better than that! We’ll be bringing the twins with us and spending the night.”

20

I smiled as Susan clapped her hands together in awe. “It’s a black tie affair, so we’ll need to do some shopping.”

“Oh my! I cannot wait, Marty!”

divider 1

I had never told Susan about The Inheritance as that would have been met with strong disapproval from the secret society. As far as she knew, I worked for the Neptune Foundation, translating from old relics and helping to restore antiquities.

And that was a partial truth as I did do those things for the Neptune Foundation. I tried not to feel bad that I had kept so much from my sister. I told myself it was okay that she didn’t know because she would never believe in the paranormal anyway.

21

The night of the fundraiser, Susan was a wreck. She closeted herself away in her suite of rooms to get ready so I brought the children into the nursery and watched as they played.

22

They were in their comfy jammies and would be going to bed soon. Someone Xalen trusted had been brought in to care for them during the night because we expected to be busy with foundation business.

23

“Have you thought any more about moving here with the children?” he said from behind me, startling me.

24

“It’s a difficult decision,” I sighed, turning to face him. “I’ve grown to really like my house. This place is so big… it doesn’t feel like it could be home.”

“Home is who you are with, Marty. It is not the building itself.”

He was right, of course. And we’d had this discussion many times since giving birth to the babies. It didn’t make sense for him to move into my house since it took him so far away from his work. Emergencies seemed to pop up all the time causing the team to travel with only moments’ notice. No, he had to be here.

The only other option was for us to move into the mansion.

25

“Where are my manners?” he suddenly said, a small smile curling the corners of his mouth. “You take my breath away with your loveliness.”

He had a way with words but he couldn’t change the subject for long. Still, I returned the compliment. “And you are handsome as ever.”

26

Looking into his eyes, my heart melted and any reservation I had about living in this cavernous house left me.

27

As his arms snaked around my waist, I held him close to me, breathing in the familiar scent of mint and soap.

“I love you, Xalen, and I hate living away from you. It isn’t right for our family to be apart.”

28

“I was hoping you would say that,” he said softly, his lips meeting mine in a gentle kiss.

29

Taking my hand, he led me across the room, then he dropped to one knee. I never expected to be proposed to so this took me by complete surprise.

30

“I was hoping it would be more romantic,” he said after I told him I would be his wife, “but this seemed the right time.”

And it was.

33

As he whispered in my ear sweet promises of devotion, my heart soared.

34

Tears of happiness dampened my cheeks.

This important moment had occurred amongst strewn toys and garish pink walls. In front of our children.

And it was perfect.

35

As I went to find Susan in her rooms, I felt as if I was walking on air. Sure, my feet were already killing me in those darn high heeled shoes, but nothing – and I mean nothing – could spoil the pure bliss I felt at the moment.

“Come in,” Susan called when I knocked on her door.

Upon entering, my breath caught in my throat because standing before me was the loveliest creature I’d ever laid eyes upon.

36

My assessment must have been written all over my face because she finally smiled a little and said, “So you approve?”

“You look absolutely stunning!”

37

Of course, I’d planned on telling her about my engagement, however, all I could do was stare at her in admiration. I could tell her tomorrow. Tonight, I decided, belonged to my sister.

41

The guests hadn’t arrived yet and I found Xalen and Owen talking in the hall where the Sprague Collection was on display.

Shelly wouldn’t be here for this fundraiser as she was still in Saltwell. She was staying with Eric Paris and they were putting his wife Viv to rest… for good.

40

Entering the next room where the statue being dedicated was, I decided to see if Susan was alone and bored. Stopping in my tracks, I realized Susan would definitely not be bored or alone tonight.

38

It seemed she had run into Daniel Knight. Stifling a giggle, I moved further behind the statue, hoping I hadn’t spoiled their moment.

Susan was standing demurely as Daniel spoke. He was clearly trying to impress her. Then he said something I couldn’t hear, she blushed and smiled which made her appear all the more delectable.

39

Oh how I wished I could hear their words. But then, this really was none of my business. As Susan and Daniel became lost in each others’ eyes, I tiptoed out of the room.

  1. Where to begin!

I’m glad Susan finally admitted she has a problem. I hope the clinic can help her and that Susan can find her self-worth. Hmmm…maybe Daniel can help with that. 😀

OMG, that Yoga was more than adorable! Unfortunately, links are broken and the poses don’t seem to be available anymore. 🙁

The proposal was super sweet – right there in the nursery, too. We can never say that Marty and Xalen aren’t original. LOL! I love how unconentional they are.

    • It’s about time Susan admitted this. I like your thoughts about Daniel!

Bee’s poses are so amazing, aren’t they? The yoga poses are still available. I think the link did change though. This is the right one: Mommy and Me Yoga.

I loved how unconventional Marty and Xalen were, too. 😀

  2. Aw the twins are awesome and congratulations on the engagement Marty and Xalen.
Just a point to ask, if Marty and the twins will move out on the mansion of the Neptune Foundation and if Susan will date with Daniel where will she lives? In the NF or she’ll stay at the current sister’s house.

  3. Stepping on lego.. ouch! I’ve done that quite a few times when my sister and I left our toys out… how are those small things so sore?! And I think kids regularly make up their own languages – apparently I did it with my sister too! But I only had words for cake and sausage… I think that says a lot about me!
““Was it, though?” I asked, stirring my tea. “I mean seems like the problems are all the same it’s just the scenery has changed.”” Okay this line though… Well done for her for realising something that many don’t! it’s such an important thing to know – you can’t run from your problems because they’re with you, and trying to do so usually makes things worse. I guess she learned this from the running she did herself, huh?
Poor Susan, though. It’s so easy to get caught up in your head and believe the spiral of lies we tell ourselves. As my mother wisely says, telling ourselves we aren’t good enough is the worst and most common lie we say.
You know, I sort of disagree with Xalen’s comment about home. To a large extent it is the people, of course, but once you settle somewhere and make memories in a place it is hard to leave. And I think people who grow up in safe and simple places which then move to the bigger places feel more homesick in times of change or stress.
    Aaaah a proposal! Woot! 😀

    • Thank you so much <3 Legos are the worst and I don't know why either, but they hurt bad when you step on them. lol

So you had a secret language, too! Cool! My kids did as well. It was more like my son used to speak for my daughter which made my daughter think she didn't even need to learn how to talk. haha She would babble something and my son would say, "Momma, my baby wants a drink." lol Finally, I told him it was important that she ask for whatever herself. 😛

Marty did learn something throughout it all, didn't she? I agree that it was probably due to how she was always on the run herself. Good thought!

Your mother sounds very wise indeed. I agree that it is the things we tell ourselves, our inner dialog that has the most influence.

I see exactly what you mean about Xalen's comment about home. And I think you have a very valid point.

  4. I am so glad that Susan was finally ready to admit her problem and seek help! Things are really looking up for her, and Daniel seems so charming. There may be something there. Glad Marty got her to come out. It really does seem Susan is always at the house.

How sweet that Xalen proposed. <3 He and Marty are really good together.

    • Thank you so much, Heather! 🙂 I think Susan is fully on the road to recovery and some good things in her life. I agree with you that she was at the house way too much.

I finished writing Xalen and Marty’s wedding today! <3 I think they're really good together, too.

  5. Yay!! Xalen finally put a ring on it!!!
I can’t even put into words how excited I am for Susan. I’m so happy Marty finally got through to her. You are right, there is no “cure” but I am so happy that Susan is taking positive steps to become more healthy.
And she looked so amazing in that dress!!

    • Thank you so much 🙂 I laughed at your “Xalen finally put a ring on it” comment! haha Yes, finally!

I’m excited for Susan, too. I think she is heading for some very happy times and no one deserves that more than her, I think.

  6. It’s nice that Susan was able to face her problem instead of denying it. And maybe, Theo should’ve told his former fiancee about WHY he ended the engagement.
It’s ok though, she’s clearly moving on to handsommer pastures 😉
And congrats to Xalen and Marty.

    • Thank you so much, Violincat. 🙂 I agree with you about Theo. Even if he didn’t feel like he could tell anyone else, he should have at least told her since they were engaged at the time. I think you’re right, though. Susan has some very happy times ahead of her. 🙂

  7. I am so happy for Susan right now! I’m probably even happier about her and Daniel possibly hooking up so she too can move to the big house when Marty does. Since she doesn’t know about the real agenda of the Neptune Foundation, I need a reason for her to be there! XD You can tell I love her. Of course, I love Marty as well. I’m even more in love with her and Xalen. Oh gosh, I can’t wait for them to tie the knot and go on their next ghost hunt as husband and wife! This is what I’ve been waiting for since the beginning. Haha.

    • Thank you so much, Rosie 🙂 Susan’s prospects look pretty good right now! I’m so glad you’re on board and that you love her. <3 Marty and Xalen definitely have some exciting times ahead! 😀

  8. Love love loved that sister chat! I’m telling ya…hot tea makes all serious conversations so much tastier! 😀 AND, I’m so glad Susan is finally able to admit she has a problem and is getting help! AND, a proposal?! What a pleasant surprise! AND?? lol, Susan and Daniel?!?!?! OH YES! I don’t really know why, but I’m totally onboard that ship! LOL

    • Thank you, Jes2G! I’m so glad you loved that sister chat. And you’re so right about how talking over tea makes all the difference. 😀

Susan is on the road to recovery. I think it’s always going to be a struggle for her, but at least now she is seeking out help to cope.

I couldn’t tell you why either, but it’s time Susan had a happy life of her own, so I am totally on board with that ship, too. <3 <3

  9. What a sweet chapter!! I’m so glad Susan finally got help for her eating disorder, she seems much happier now. The twins are adorable <3 And he proposed!!!!! Oh Marty, I was wondering if she'd ever be the type to settle down into marriage, turns out she is, in her own way. I hope they live happy lives 🙂

    • Thank you so much, Raymond 🙂 I’m so glad you liked the chapter. Susan is definitely on the road to happiness. I was wondering myself if Marty would really want to settle down and get married. I think in her mind, she didn’t even expect a proposal. I think their lives are going to be immensely happy. 🙂

  10. Yay! It’s all coming together nicely!! Well, maybe love is just around the corner for Susan. Tickled she’s getting the help she needs and on the road to being her complete self.

    • Thank you so much, Jolie 🙂 Wouldn’t it be nice if Susan had some happiness? I can’t wait to see what happens with her and Daniel. I guess I’m tickled, too.

  11. What a wonderful chapter! 🙂
I’m so happy that Marty managed to talk to Susan, and get her help. It was sad that Susan had to learn about why her past two boyfriends left her from Marty, but I’m glad the truth is out. It looks like she’s finally beginning to heal, which is awesome!
Eeee, Xalen proposed! I can’t wait for the wedding! And it seems romance may blossom between Susan and Daniel- he seems very nice, so I wish the best for them. Susan deserves to be happy.

    • Thank you so much, Lila! 🙂 I so agree with what you said about Susan. I think out of all the characters, she is the one who deserves happiness the most. I’m pretty sure that Daniel fits the bill. 😀

I’m going crazy over this wedding! I can’t figure out what Marty and Xalen should do! haha Ah well, I need to get on that. lol

  12. So much going on in this chapter! Susan is healing and it looks like the beginning of a new relationship with a hunk! The twins are adorable and growing up so fast. And Marty is getting married! Awesome! Great chapter. ❤️ Full of love.

    • Thank you so much, Audrey! I couldn’t agree more with your assessment of Daniel. I’m pretty sure Susan agrees, too. hahaha

I’m so glad you enjoyed this chapter. <3

    • Thank you so much, Cathy! <3 The twins are so much fun in game. Yes, I said it, even though I'm really hoping the game gives me a break on the twins in the future. LOL

Susan and Daniel just really seem to get along well. I can't wait to see what happens there.

  13. I am so glad Susan got the help she needed! She really had to hear about Theo and Victor first, in order to realize it wasn’t her fault. I certainly hope this new, blooming romance goes well!! ♥ And now a wedding!! You are going to have a lot of fun planning that affair, or will their schedule allow for a lavish, family-filled wedding?? Lots to look forward to, either way, and the twins are absolutely adorable!! Great chapter, love Marty’s gown, by the way. Hurry up, next Saturday!

    • Thank you so much, Marj! 🙂 I’m glad about Susan, too. She deserves a happy story, I think. I also think this new budding romance will be even better than she hopes. <3

I haven't decided what kind of wedding Marty and Xalen should have. Something in me thinks they would not want a lot of fuss. I've got to think about it some more. 🙂

I love these twins! They are so freaky in game how they move in unison. lol I'm with Marty on that one! haha

I'm so glad you liked Marty's gown, too. 🙂

  14. I loved this chapter!! 😀 <3 First of all, I loved seeing the two sisters bonding and Susan taking her condition more seriously.
And second, Xalen proposed!! Squee!!! <3 And it seems like Susan is about to fall in love, and with a hottie at that! I hope Daniel treats her right, she really deserves it! 🙂

  15. Dang! I was like 3/4 throughout the chapter (and it was right after you published) and I was called out to go shopping. I was so reluctant to leave. But I’m back and I finally managed to read the rest of the chapter.
I’m so glad Marty talked to her sisters and that Susan agreed to help her. I wish her all the best with her treatment. It was so heartwarming to see them bonding and it’s clear how much the sisters love each other. Adorable <3 As are the little ones of course. But Xalen won this chapter with his proposal! Yes, yes, yes, a thousand of times! I'm so glad Marty didn't do anything stupid and considered refusing like she did when Xalen offered her to work with him. It also appears that she will be living in the mansion. Almost like a princess! She deserves it after all she's been through with Beckett.
Daniel is such a handsome guy, I really like him. And I think Susan does, too. He will be a perfect match for her. Did you know that Heather's surname is Knight? That's too funny.
And I couldn't help but notice- Xalen is the babies' daddy on the family tree. I suppose it doesn't lie? I knew it! <3

    • Thank you so much, Jowita! I’m so glad you were able to get back and finish reading. lol

I think Susan can really heal because she has this family supporting her. I really love that Susan is in this part of the story with Marty and that she’s attracted to Daniel. You should have seen him in game! He really was trying so hard to impress Susan. hahaha

I forgot that Heather’s last name was Knight! lol I named Daniel that because he reminded me of a knight in shining armor. 😛 Cheesy, I know.

For all intents and purposes, Xalen is the daddy 😀 <3

      • I was a bit confused at first and I was wondering whether Daniel was compared to a knight or it was his surname. Turns out that both of my assumptions were correct, lol. Haha, yeah, I randomized her last name and this popped up, I think.
I am so glad! Xalen would still be the dad, but it’s so nice that the babies are his flesh and blood (not that he wouldn’t be connected to them by blood anyway, but you know).

        • LOL I love that both your assumptions were right.

I know what you mean about Xalen. I aged the twins up in CAS to see what they will look like. I couldn’t help it. lol Anyway, they have a lot of Sprague in them. 😀

  16. Aaaw, what a lovely chapter. It’s great to see Susan thriving at last – and might there be a little romance in the future? *Squee*
Anyway, I have to ask – Susan’s hair in the last pictures? I just have to know where it’s from 😀
This was wonderful as always 🙂

    • Thank you so much, Louise. 🙂 Oh yes, there is definitely romance in Susan’s future. As soon as she and Daniel met, those little hearts showed up. I couldn’t resist including how they met in my story. <3

Susan's hair is from here: Ace Creators. I’ll add the link to my WCIF page, too. 🙂

  17. Those toddlers are certainly cute!

FINALLY! Been waiting for you to post the proposal!!!!! I’m so happy for them all as a family. Marriage and living together. Marty finally has everything she needs…oh and a great job.

Susan looks awesome! And I’m super excited about Daniel….so hot and gorgeous…I definitely approve. I think he seems a stand up guy. Please let him be the guy she needs.

Thank you so much for using my poses! They looks wonderful with your sims.

    • Thank you so much, Bee! You know how I love your poses and think they’re tops!

Yes, FINALLY, we have a proposal! As you know, it was originally going to happen at Leo’s Christmas party but it just didn’t seem to fit. I’m so glad I moved it to now.

I really think Susan and Daniel will make an awesome couple. And wouldn’t you know, as soon as they saw each other in game, the little hearts appeared. lol
