Chapter 2.28: Dear J, Limelight

148412904651939
Dear J, I wish I could say that the drama has died down with Blue and that we’re no longer having trouble. But that would be a lie as you can see from the screenshot I took above of a fansite someone put up about her.
Now that she’s older, it’s harder to protect her from the paps. Not only that, but kids all over the world have taken notice of her and these fansites are starting to pop up all over the internet. People want to know what she’s wearing, where she’s going, who she’s dating. And it all makes me really uncomfortable.
Blue is famous by association and it doesn’t seem fair, but it’s a fact of life. The site that has me most concerned is this one because it seems like whoever runs it must have been in Hidden Springs to get these pictures.
And did you see the pictures? I haven’t even shown some of them because I just can’t bear to look at them. What I’ve come to realize, and what hurts the most is that Blue lied to me about her prom night. It’s obvious the kids didn’t go out for burgers after the dance.
9
To make things worse, Leela and I didn’t have much time to discuss any of this because Chrissy had seen the site and hurried right over.
“We’ll talk to Blue about this,” Leela said when Chrissy explained why she was there.
“Have you seen the other sites? I’m on three of them!” she exclaimed.
“Is that why you’re dressed this way?” I demanded. “Because you hope you end up on these sites? You need to go home and put some clothes on!”
As you can see, I was nearing the end of my rope.
10
Instead of attacking me for what I said, Chrissy turned to Leela and said, “My you’re getting huge! I don’t think I ever got that big when I was pregnant with Leo’s baby.”
I stepped forward, anger nearly bursting through my brain and out my mouth, when Leela held a hand up that stopped me in my tracks, indicating she could take care of this. With a tight smile, she said, “You can’t hurt me, Chrissy, so you may as well stop your efforts. All you’re doing is showing what a child you are. But if you would like to continue, perhaps you could leave the room or something while the adults discuss what we should do about all of this.”
This is not at all how I would have handled Chrissy, but I have to tell you, what Leela said, shut her up but good. I’ve gotta mention, yet again, what a classy woman I’m married to. How’d I get so lucky? Never mind, it’s best not to dwell on that kind of thing. I don’t want to jinx anything.
11
And then Leela did something that made me grin inwardly. She managed to produce the easiest, most confident smile I think I’ve ever seen. I could tell Chrissy was really thrown.
“Well, I think I should be going now.”
“So soon?” Leela pleasantly said.
12
“Why don’t you stay for some cookies, milk and nap time?”
Chrissy’s jaw dropped about a foot. “Now you’re just making fun of me.”
“What? No, I’m just trying to be a gracious host.”
16
I was about to add my two cents when Ruby ran inside, out of breath.
“What’s wrong?” I asked. “Are you okay?”
She nodded and when she could talk normally, she said, “Did you see those fan sites about Blue that popped up?”
17
“We were actually just discussing those,” I answered.
“Well, the whole school is going on and on about them and what happened on prom night and Blue is really upset!”
18
“Did you notice the pictures of me on at least three of those sites?”
I gave Chrissy a harsh glare, then turned back to Ruby, “Go on, honey.”
19
“She’s really upset and she said she won’t come home ever again.”
Furrowing my eyebrows, my heart sinking, I said, “Why in the world would she say that?”
“She’s afraid you’re going to blow your top at her and she said she can’t deal with it right now.”
20
This view Blue had of me was really cutting me to the core. Had I ever been unreasonable with her? Okay, that probably wasn’t the best question, but I honestly didn’t think I’d ever given her any reason to fear me. Sure, I was seethingly angry and felt like blowing my top, as Ruby put it. But that didn’t mean I wouldn’t try to be calm.
Mainly, I wanted to know exactly how far things went with that boy on prom night. At the moment, that was my biggest concern. Once I found that out, I could talk to her about it. Maybe that night has had something to do with her recent attitude problems.
21
“Leo, this is outrageous! It’s clear to me that you aren’t able to provide her with a place she feels comfortable being in.”
Finally, I gave Chrissy my full attention. “I don’t remember inviting you here. Also, you’re not really qualified to speak about Blue as if you know her. It’s time for you to go.” When she started to protest, I stepped closer to her, backing her up without touching her until she was near the front door. “See ya’,” I said as I opened the door.
After she stomped her way down the driveway, I closed the door and leaned against it. “Ruby, text Blue and tell her to come home, that no one is going to yell at her.”
“Okay, but I don’t know if she’ll listen to me.”
“Tell her if she doesn’t come home, we’ll be looking for her with the police.”
“Ooooh, I think that will do it,” Ruby said as she pulled out her phone.
22
It was getting late when I heard Blue come in. I was in the kitchen, emptying the dishwasher. Not hurrying to go see her, I finished what I was doing which took a few minutes. As I came through the dining room and then the foyer, I heard Blue playing the piano. It was an easy song, but it seemed like I hadn’t heard her play in ages.
“We need to talk.”
“I know,” she said. She finished the song, which was nearing the end anyway, before standing to face me.
23
“I know what you saw,” she said with a glum expression.
“Then suppose you explain it to me.”
Anger flashed through her green eyes, darkening them with fury. “You know, it’s not right that people can just snap pictures of me when I don’t even know it and put it on a website!”
24
“I’m sure that seems really unfair,” I said, “but you’re in the limelight now and the worse you behave, the more people will crave pictures of you. It’s not right, but it’s how it is, so you need to adjust accordingly.”
“I need to adjust? Why can’t you make them stop?”
25
I counted to ten before answering her. “There’s something really wrong here, Blue. You seem to think I have control of this. Well, I don’t. I’ve tried to protect you as best I can but now that you’re older and you’re doing things without me, they are going to do what they want. So far, they don’t seem to have printed anything untrue. You know what’s really amazing to me right now is that instead of being remorseful for the prom pictures, you act like you’ve been wronged!”
“I have been wronged! And it’s your fault. Were it not for you, I wouldn’t even be in this predicament!”
26
And there we had it. She’d probably been wanting to say that for a long time, but had only now found the nerve to actually do it.
“You know what?” I said with a harshness to my voice that shamed me later when I looked back on this moment. “I have tried to do the best I can for you! I worked hard to make sure you had a good life and never needed for anything! I put up with stuff you don’t even know about and I was willing to pay any price to make sure you lived a charmed life! Maybe I should have left you, too, to live with your Grandparents, but I didn’t think that was the right thing to do. You know why? Because you’re my daughter and I love you more than anyone or anything!”
She clenched her fists into little balls and gritted her teeth. “Well, I’m sorry you went through so much! I guess you shouldn’t have had me!”
“Did you even hear anything I said? As soon as I learned you existed, I wanted you!”
Staring at the floor, her breath coming in angry heaves, she bit her lip until it bled a tiny bit. I watched her for a moment and then decided, since we were having it all out, I should just try to find out everything I wanted to know needed to know.
29
“Tell me what you did on prom night. I want to know everything.”
“It doesn’t matter now.”
“Tell me,” I said, emphasizing every word. “I saw some pictures.” When she still didn’t respond or look at me, I continued, “Did you sleep with that boy?”
“Yes!” she screamed at me. “I did! But it doesn’t matter now because he broke up with me.”
In a kind of muted, stunned silence, which seemed to sometimes hit me, I thought about that scrawny boy with his hands on my daughter. The most precious gift I’d ever received and that damn scarecrow had his –
– I had to stop my line of thought and concentrate on Blue.
“Do you hate me?” she asked, her lower lip shaking slightly as tears filled her eyes.
“No.” It was all I could say at the moment.
28
As I stood there, trying to ignore the tightness in my chest and the grief stabbing my heart, Blue slowly backed out of the room and went upstairs.

  1. And the drama continues. Leo has a point. Like it or not, Blue is in the limelight by association and Daddy can’t fix it all simply because she demands it. She brought some of it on herself by cavorting with that kid on Prom Night, and she’s going to have to live with those circumstances. Even so, it hurts my heart to see her and Leo at such odds right now. However, it was kind of funny to see Chrissy acting the way she did about the pictures. I think she would be the one who would totally eat up the limelight. LOL.

    • We’re getting to a fever pitch with the drama. lol I like what you said about Blue being responsible and living with the circumstances of her actions. It hurt my heart, too, when they were going through all this angst and at such odds. They were so close before.

OMG Yes! You’re so right about Chrissy and the limelight! Too bad she is so untalented. haha

  2. I don’t know. It’s really hard for me to feel sorry for Blue. She’d just had that major fit about The Award and not being acknowledged for her own (non)achievements. Is this the only type of attention she can garner? Also, it’s not like Blue hasn’t known all her life about paparazzi. Your juxtaposition of Ruby and Blue make Blue seem even more spoiled and out of touch with reality.
I realize I’m judging Blue really harshly. I just feel like Leo deserves better. Blue, stop acting like your biological mother!

On the other hand, Leela is awesome. Leo’s relationship with Leela really grounds him.
I wish Blue would hurry and grow up so Leo and Leela can enjoy their time together with their newborn.

On a different note, thank heavens Blue wasn’t left pregnant from her prom night. That would be a nightmare.

    • Thank you so much. 🙂 Blue does seem to have some of her mom’s tendencies even though she wasn’t raised around her. I can totally see why you wouldn’t feel sorry for her. I just reread this chapter and I was like, “Wow, Blue.” LOL

I love Leela. You’re so right that her calmness really does ground him.

Oh, yeah, that would have been a horrible nightmare. In a way, it would have continued Chrissy’s legacy.

  3. What was the point of Chrissy showing up? It certainly wasn’t concern for her daughter and it wasn’t for concern for her own privacy being invaded. She seemed to relish the attention. Asking everyone if they saw her pictures. Go away Chrissy!
Blue had a right to be upset about the paps but if she really wanted privacy she should have gotten a room. Really she was out in the open anyone could have seen them. It just happened to be someone with ulterior motives. She’s the daughter of a famous person. She should know by now that everything she does is newsworthy. Her dad can’t protect her forever. She’s not a little kid any more and she needs to stop blaming her dad for her own mistakes. Blue had more sense as a toddler than she has as a teenager.

  4. Blue should appreciate what Leo does for her! Blue must be really embarrassed of those pictures, especially when the entire school has seen them!
Love how Leela handled Chrissy! She really deserved that!
    Nice chapter! 🙂

    • Thank you, shannynlee 🙂 I think you’re right that Blue is incredibly embarrassed by the pictures. And, oh my goodness, but Leela was fun to write in this chapter! haha I’m so glad you liked it.

  5. Poor Blue. I can’t imagine how creepy it would be to have thousands of people you never met be obsessed with everything yo do, eat, wear, etc.
Although Leo does have a point about the paparazzi (he has been dealing with them for a lot longer than she has). If you don’t act out, they will leave you alone. So what Blue needs to do is look at Kim Kardashian, or really anyone in the Kardasian/Jenner family. See what they do, then Blue should do the exact opposite!!

    • Thank you so much, socallucyfan 🙂 That would be very creepy indeed! I agree that the paparazzi are a very good reason Blue should behave herself. lol And I so agree with you about the Kardashian comment. 🙂

  6. Leela you go girl! way to put that no good gold digging Chrissy in her place.
Oh Blue Blue Blue, honey I wish you would mature a little and see that he dumped you because he got what he wanted from you. He just wants to be able to claim he got to sleep with the famous Blue. Prepare yourself for talk and even a story from him coming out.

    • Thank you, Lil! 😀 I loved Leela, too, in this chapter, I have to admit. As for what you say about Blue, you have actually hit the nail on the head; but more on that in another chapter. 🙂

  7. Aye yi yi yi! First off Crissy GET LOST .. aargh. And Blue stop deflecting your bad choices with the “unfair about my famous father routine” you have to be your own fault!

  8. I’m mostly on Blue’s side here. If they weren’t famous, she wouldn’t have had such a private moment of her life exposed for all to see. If I were in her shoes, I’d feel the same way.
I know it’s difficult for Leo to accept that his little girl grew up, but he shouldn’t judge her for this. If anything, he really needs to look into who took the pictures. I mean, they followed her with her boyfriend?! That’s a major invasion of privacy.

    • Thank you, Violincat! 🙂 Like you, I think Blue has some valid points regarding her position. That’s a good suggestion of having Leo find out who took the pics in the first place as it was a moment that anyone would expect to be private. If not in the next chapter, then the one after that will explain a bit more. I’m just not sure which I think it will fit in best yet. 😀

  9. Gosh, I can’t believe how insensitive the paparazzi are sometimes. I know stories like those make good gossip, but that’s such an invasion of Blue’s privacy. I hate how that guy just used her for what he wanted and left! She’s better off without him though. Can’t wait to see her point of view of things next generation!

    • Thank you, Raymond. 🙂 Blue has had her problems lately. I totally agree with what you said about the paps and also about the prom date. Gen 3 has me really excited!

  10. I don’t really blame Leo for losing his temper like that. He’s done so much for Blue and all she thinks about is her own problems, so I think she needed to have that said to her face. I do feel sorry for her getting targeted by the paparazzi, though, it must suck getting your private moments put up on fansites you didn’t know about. It’s quite creepy. And it’s sad for Blue to have her heart broken like that, but it’s a good thing that boy is gone now. Oh, and I LOVED how Leela dealed with that Chrissy 😂
    Great chapter!

    • Thank you so much, Lila. 🙂 I don’t blame Leo either. There is only so much one can take. I feel sorry for Blue, too, and agree that it would be creepy to have all your personal business all over the place like that, especially if you weren’t a celebrity in your own right. I’m so glad the boy is gone, too. He really did hurt her; we’ll hear more about it later. And, oh, snap! Go, Leela, go! lol 😀

  11. Oh, this is so difficult . I’ve got a feeling we’re going to need to wait until Blue is a young adult , more older , to see understanding and harmony return.

  12. This just reminds me how blessed I am to have my kids all grown!! Poor Blue, that damnable teenage angst is even worse for her because of the paparazzi. Of course she blames her dad, she has to blame someone! I know she broke Leo’s heart, and it’s a good thing that “scrawny boy” wasn’t anywhere nearby!! I imagine somewhere down the line, Leo will have a chance to “talk” to him about things. I hope Blue can approach Leela to get another female point of view, and begin to forgive herself for that night. Heaven help us if she approaches Chrissy, but I am afraid she might!
    =(

    • Imagine being a teen and not even able to hold your boyfriends hand walking down the street in the big city because if you did, your parents would find out within half hour! Not a fun time as a teen. I relate to Blue completely.

    • Thank you, Marj. 🙂 I totally agree with your assessment of Blue and that Leo is the easiest person for her to blame right now. You’re so right about that scrawny boy! Good thing he wasn’t within reach! lol It would be nice if Blue approached Leela because I actually think that would help her get through the things that are bothering her. But…. there is something in store for Blue that might change her view of things. lol You’re right that the worst thing she could do is approach Chrissy. That would probably be a disaster. LOL

  13. And…..there we have it. Blue really is a typical teen. One thing that bothers me though….isn’t Ruby somewhat to blame in all of this. I mean they went to prom together, so why doesn’t she have some idea where Blue had been or what she was doing? Girls know. Plus since this boy got what he wanted, then broke up with her, it really would be the talk all over school. So Ruby would hear what happened. If this were me, Ruby would be in for some trouble too. Yup, I’m that mom.
I love how you used that pose to indicate foreplay. I’ve always thought that when I saw that pose and I never used it for that reason. Some best friend poses are like that too for girls…… yup nope.
I am so excited where you are taking this story. Okay, I get to read your chapters ahead so I KNOW where the story is going. But for anyone reading my comment, this is going to get SOOOOOO much fun and my excitement to wait for each Saturday to arrive just increased 10 fold, as they say. Well Done RO! Bad girl Blue! I hope it was worth it!

    • Thank you, Bee! 🙂 It’s a good question about what Ruby knew and when. This is something to think about. I’m sure Ruby would have been torn both ways; does she rat on her bestfriend/sister and lose her trust forever? Or does she remain loyal to Blue no matter how misguided that may be. You know, that pose struck me that way, too. Thank you also for the encouragement! I’m so excited for Gen 3, I can’t hardly contain it! 😀 😀

  14. Poor Blue and…poor Leo. They used to be on such good terms and now damn paparazzi managed to crash even more of their bond. This is so cruel. I felt my heart warming when I read Leo’s words that he wanted her from the very beginning. But does she want her dad anymore? It was fun to see Chrissy’s acting about the pictures of herself, maybe she’s the one person that is happy with the limelight.

    • Thank you, Jowita. 🙂 I think you’re right that Chrissy is the only one who enjoys the limelight! LOL 😀 Things are strained between Blue and Leo right now and the paps really make things worse, that’s for sure. They bug me so much in game, too. lol
